Rally vs. Rallye
Rally vs. Rallye
Hello,
what is the difference between "Rally" (see cover new journal) and "Rallye"?
My dictionary doesn´t say anything.

I know: oldtimer is an old man - but in Germany this are old cars...
Some different meanings in different countrys.
But: I think, there is a diffenrent meaning between rally and rallye - if I remember right my school days (long, long ago...).
Rally is a great meeting of a lot of people (for example a concours d´elegance of classic cars).
Rallye is motorsport.
But: I wanted to hear some opinions from english mainland for this...
So: we are driving rallyes, not rallys. That´s what I mean.

Klaus,
Keith is quite right - we only have the one correct spelling "rally" it has quite a range of meanings (I won't list them all here) which includes motorsport (noun & verb), a group or gathering of people (n), organising a group of people (v) etc. The correct plural is "rallies". I have seen the rallye spelling used before but this is not the correct English spelling (for any of the meanings) - Keith used that spelling in the example he gave for artistic reasons.

A concourse is a place where paths ( walkways ) converge.Martin R wrote:Concours or concourse
Concours is a diminutive of concours d'élégance i.e. a contest of elegance.
I think it was first used in the 1930’s regarding cars where coachbuilders would show
off their craft although I seem to remember reading about Hooper coachbuilders sending
a carriage off to France for a concours d'élégance in about 1840.
More correctly today I think the emphasis is on condition rather than style or elegance.
That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.
(PS It's Rally)
