Int 3 at Stacey's auction AJW 219M

Post by Peter Rothery »

https://www.staceyauction.com/Auction-Detail_367312. No I had never heard of this auction house either!!!! Cheap estimate for a good running car....but obviously a closer inspection may be in order. HOWEVER note "Please note that the buyers premium applied to this lot is 25% including VAT." OUCH.

And if you bid online: "Please note that any lots purchased via the-saleroom.com live auction service will be subject to an additional 4.95% commission charge VAT at the rate imposed on the hammer price."

You can't pay by credit card either - but they make a point about saying that they don't apply any additional charge if you pay by debit card. Very generous of them!

If the Club/Registrar know the owner/family from its records (because they’re a club member), surely a telephone call to clarify whether they’re aware of current auction results and the excessive commission sought by this auction house would be worthwhile…and an example of club membership adding value?

Incredible, this is the only car in the auction and the rest is just a jumble sale.

Doubt many car enthusiasts will attend, so the result will be a bargain for the purchaser.

In fairness to the auction house (who, as you say, peddle predominantly jumble...or should that be quality antiques?) they probably looked at something like the latest Classic Cars magazine price guide and saw a "good" Interceptor was valued at £15,000 - and on the decline from last month - and set their guide (taking into account the massive buyers premium) at what they thought it was going to sell for.

It hasn't been on the road for 5+ years so may well need some work. Now that we know about it.....let us see how many bidders push the price up to where we seem to think it should be.

It could also be a probate sale with solicitors involved or even a bankruptcy sale/overdue storage debt where the creditors/landlords don't care what the asset sells for - providing their debt is covered. The auction house might just be attempting to stimulate a lot of interest by setting a low reserve......TICK!

I wonder what the sellers commission is. The auction might end up getting more than the vendor if the commission is a similar percentage..

Wow...That looks cheap and on the surface in pretty good shape. Engine bay looks really good. not sure about the paint.

Price chart from Pete was interesting. looks like the Mk1 has premium over MK2/3 and SP. Dont think thats always been the case.

What is clear Jensens are not a car for investors thats for sure, much better spend your wedge on that other handcrafted car builder in Dagenham.
Oh why didnt i keep that Escort Mk1, Cortina 1600E, or XR2.
I remember now... they didnt start, left a small oil reserve on my drive, handled like a baby whale, then fell to bits.

and the incredible buyer's premium to pay which in total meant the buyer paid £15,625

I bid up to £11,000 and stopped - I think there were 3 bidders including me !

If you were bidding online you would have to pay another £711.25 online commission fee on top of the 25%.
