Sorry, was in a hurry.

From John St.

There is very little history for 2428, but that may be because it has had few owners. Sold to James David Burrows of British Man-Made (Waste Fibres) Ltd on 03.03.1966, originally Botticelli Blue with a Mushroom interior. Bought by Jimmy Ashford-Fleet in 1971. The next recorded owner is Peter D Whitaker, JOC member 29 (so he may have bought the car from Jimmy Ashford Fleet who bought and sold a lot of C-V8s). Peter Whitaker left the JOC in 2003 and I know he died (which may be why he left the club, but I don't know when he died). Andrew Cassar bough the car and sold it to Belgium, but Andrew would not tell me who he sold cars to so I don't know who bought it, and sent me photos of the car in a garage (possibly a 'lock-up' - sorry I don't know the German word for a lock-up) looking very dusty, as if it had been there a long time. It is possible Andrew bought it from Peter Whitaker's family. I don't know when Andrew sold the car, only that he sent me photos in 2017. Oddly Peter Whitaker is recorded as joining the JOC in 1990, but membership number 29 would have been issued soon after the club was formed in the 1970s I don't know why this is, perhaps he joined the club, left and then rejoined, or the 1990 date is a mistake). When Cassar sold the car it was still blue and RHD, but the interior looks white.

Hi all

If this is 112/2428 i have this car in the ownership of Philip Dudley JOC Member No 422 - in JOC Magazine 15 07.1996
2nd Place in the 1976 JOC Concours and Registration No FUB 418 D
Also in JOC Magazine 16 09.1996 and still in Philip's ownership
Displayed at Weston Park Concours and achieved 3rd Place
Also in Magazine 27 07.1978 when it was on Registration No PJD 428 (private plate for Philip?)

I believe that the car was then for sale in 2010 and Andrew Cassar in Wandsworth and was noted as having been off the road for 31 years with Registration No GBC 900 D
Still Blue with a Mushroom/Cream interior
Then i believe for sale in 2016 in Cornwall with a Tan interior

Kind regards

Hi all

James Ashford-Fleet was JOC Mem No 9 and certainly owned the car in 1973

Dr P D Whittaker JOC Mem No 29 appeared to still owned the car in 1980

Philip Dudley appeared to own the car in 1980 until at least 1996

Kind Regards

Whitaker was member 29 in Issue No 1 owning a CV8 MkIII. He died in 2009. Presumably his son and daughter would be able to throw more light on matters for whoever buys it

Joerg told me this is 2428, he contacted the seller to find out the chassis number. I would never have recognised the car if Joerg had not told me which one it was.

There is a very old discussion on the forum from April 2010 when 2428 came up for sale and it is titled 'C-V8 Mk111 One owner 35 years'. a forum member called 'Lawson' contacted the seller to find out which car it was, as the advert didn't say, and the seller confirmed it was 2428 and that it had belonged to his late father, the seller didn't give a full name but his father must have been Peter Whittaker who lived in the West Midlands, which is where the car was when it was advertised. By 28th April the car had been sold and at the beginning of May it was advertised again on eBay for £2000 more than it had sold for, exactly what Andrew Cassar used to do. This is the advert that Jim saw, or a similar one. After that I lost track of the car, until in 2017 Andrew Cassar told me "I sent this one to Belgium", by which I assume he meant sold it to Belgium, and sent a photo.

All of the info Jim gives regarding Philip Dudley and the various changes of registration relates to 2458 and not 2428.

I at first wasn't sure if it was the one for sale in Germany a while back (112/2387?), but obviously not the same car

All a little confusing as by coincidence Dr Whitaker’s middle name was Dudley. As I say, in due course a new owner could contact Dr Whitaker’s ‘children’, now in their sixties and teenagers in the 70s, to tell the story, may even have some photos

There is an interesting story about James David Burrows, the first owner. In 1940, when he was only 30 years old, but already managing director of the family company, he bought a Spitfire. Not for himself, this was during the Battle of Britain when cities and towns were encouraged to set up Spitfire Funds to buy Spitfires for the war effort and that is what he did, he bought a Spitfire, but all by himself, it was called Brenda, after his wife. A Spitfire cost £5000 in 1940 (or that is what the public were asked to raise for each one, I think the reality was a Spitfire cost a bit more than that, but I guess £5000 was a nice round figure to aim for) so when Mr Burrows came to buy the C-V8 he probably wasn't worried about the cost.
