Post by Willdavies »

Hello,
A friend has been over and he runs his own photo hobby with some better image quality than mine, so as well as the Instagram link I will dump shareable links to the above car on this post.

Search Instagram for mikes_photos82.

There will be more updates in the coming months as the pace of work will accelerate.

As some of you don't use Instagram/Facebook this is an avenue that is open to everyone!

Cheers

Will

I have only seen that one other time and it was on a Buick 455 with a stamped steel impeller and it had rusted away. That's crazy. I bet it will cool a lot better with a working water pump! :)

Pretty nasty and a find I did not expect!

Bit of a back story on the car:

Bought by my father who sadly is not with us.
He ran his own repair shop for a while back in the late eighties out of a unit near a pig farm just outside Oxford. The farmer (Mr f b goodgame) purchased the car in 1978 from Sperry's a well known used car dealer in Oxford. Last MOT states 38,000 miles .
This car was sat in one of the farmers units, plugs removed and damaged to the front lower panel and door(if I remember the story )
The farmer had come home one night after a few pints and crashed it into a gate.
He then proceeded to park the car up remove the plugs and squirt oil down the piston bores. This was to stop the motor seizing, but he did not replace the plugs.

My father bought the car in 1987 off the above farmer.

He re built the engine, new pistons, rings, bearings, rad re core and there is more which is documented.

He was in the middle of doing some work to the body, new outer sills, inner wing repairs and some repairs to the floors when he closed the business.
The unfinished repairs are now in need of re fabricating, and replacing. It was his ambition to get the car road worthy and was stored at our family home for a retirement plan. Unfortunately he became ill and never finished the car.

Now here she is in need of a bit of tlc!
Floor pans and sills are after very close inspection pretty ropey. A post near side wing lower off side, inner wings where they meet outer wings on front need re build.

Over the last two and a half years I have set about re building the tailgate which now needs finishing (planishing and a few small patches) then bump stops and spring plates re attached.
The car has now been stripped and bar a few small parts (gearbox rear axle front suspension!). She is ready to be mounted to a trolley that will utilise the jacking points for reference when the sills and floors are done.

Taking some time but I will get there!

Await further updates

Cheers will

Not selectarides! Which I thought this car still had.
Any ideas on brand? Can't see any markings.
Also I need to remove front suspension. The bible says 3/8 bsf bolts. Any idea what tpi, there's 16 or 20 available.
Cheers

Not an expert, but if it is 3/8" BSF it would surely be 20 tpi?

If it was 3/8" 16 tpi, it would be BSW. That is used more on castings, I think?

Evening,

I have been a silly sausage.

The bolts are unf. I should have just read the manual like a sane person!

Suspension tear down passenger side. These bolts have been soaking for a month or so.
Inner wing covers removed and revealed a lot of mud behind headlamps.
Rust wise, what I expected in all honesty.

None of these bolts have been touched since the car was made. Anti roll bar ends were seized, but the rest came off without a hiccup.

Onwards I March

Cheers

This weekends work.
The bolt that goes through the wishbones is completely frozen, so leave them to soak in more oil and move onto other tasks.
Rack removed and oil cooler, these bolts were seized also.

Passenger door stripped of glass and chrome.
I plan on doing floors, moving out to chassis a post and all the rot I find.

I have completely forgot just how much of a real pain in the arse the old underseal is to remove!
Even with Tig on cold, you miss a bit and the garage stinks .

Floor prep started.
Measured as per manufacturer spec. These cars were built to quite a high standard back in their day, diagonal measurements after several re measures were within 2mm. That's pretty good in my book!

I don't think it's braveness, just take a step at a time and keep progressing. The front panel is nothing like the tailgate, that was a mission! One that I will not be repeating . . Ever.

Plans at present are to work areas at a time clean prep repair and epoxy each as I go. So the shell will never be completely bare. starting on floors sills, the moving onto engine bay bulkhead then front panel. Doors and bonnet will be done with the corresponding sections.
As it stands all that is left on shell, some wiring to boot, door wiring, a steering wheel and column drivers side suspension intact (at the moment) a few brake lines in engine bay windscreen, complete drivers side door and glass.

Cheers will

Latest shenanigans.

Didn't see the point replacing whole pan, it's actually pretty good after the sill, which is 'crispy'.

Should be welded in next weekend with the additional patches.

Cheers
