The media headlines do not help.

The cut off in 2040 is ONLY for the production of fully petrol or diesel engines in cars not usage.

I have a good friend who works at one of 20 UK sites that have 10 x 120L V16 Red diesel generator sets with each

site having 100,000 litres of fuel. These sites produce electric on demand to top up the grid when demand

outstrips production in the evenings . (ie kettle going on after Eastenders)

It does feel hipocritical to charge your car knowing the electric is produced by diesel doesnt it !

It's a classic politician's "solution" to a problem which does not require said politician to actually do anything much at all himself.
I agree its a usual politician soundbite....cant see it happening within 50 years..too many vested interests and no Government is brave enough to take anything other than a short term view....

Hybrid petrol and electric vehicles apparently not included in the ban. That would seem to answer concerns over range, but also means there would still be a requirement for the sale of petrol.
A report also suggested that charging as few as 6 electric cars in close proximity could cause localised power drops. So if the whole street is on charge.......
Pity they sold off all the old rail lines for developement that Beeching closed, instead of mothballing for potential future reuse.

Or we could try to make our own fuel in our backyard?

You have to remember there will be a lot of ''old'' cars needing petrol for many years after petrol powered cars have stopped being made, even if you just allow for the normal decay that will be another 10 years. Also there will be a lot of very valuable cars needing fuel and I dont see them just being mothballed.

I honestly dont think we have to worry in our lifetimes, yes things will change as per legislation and where we can go with our cars and I am sure they will find a way of taxing us but I am sure while they are still vehicles needing fossil fuels it will still be available.

:D Just replace the Cab unit with a Jensen towing the tank and you have an image of future Jensen owners "wandering the wasteland" in search of the last drops of Gas.

This hits the nail on the head. All the press have been saying is a ban on petrol and diesel but it's nothing of the sort. They are just saying that all new vehicles must be electric or hybrid. Anyone who owns a Toyota Prius or such like will know that you still have to visit the petrol station regularly. Admitedly not as regularly as in a Jensen!

When fossil petroleum runs out surely we'll use organically produced ethanol.

LPG will still be produced for the foreseeable so conversions will become much neater in appearance as they become the sole option for classics and you can still use your V8.Simples!

I hope LPG doesn't become popular, it means the price will go through the roof :( My 4l V8 RangeRover loves the stuff, it only costs 42p/litre at the moment, and has been hovering around that price for the past 2 years. :D

Don't worry about this.
It's just a sop to environMENTAL pressure groups and has no real meaning.
Are all trucks and buses going to be fully-electric?
Sure, all manufacturers are going to be producing electric cars, in order to greenwash their image, but nobody is going to buy them.
At least, not in any real quantity.
The number of buyers who trade in an electric or hybrid car for another one is close to zero.
It's an experience they are not keen to repeat.
I was astonished to see Tesla S cars as taxis in Stockholm yesterday.
I would love to see the economics of that explained.
Bring back the trolley-buses - they were great!
