100/1065 restoration is about to recommence

Post by jpmf »

Having acquired 100/1065 in North Yorkshire in July it is now finally in place to restart the restoration. Extensive work was done to it starting 10 years ago, but stalled due to ill health 8 years ago, here is a brief outline:

The metalwork has all been done, not sure about the battery box

Although it has been painted unfortunately it now suffers from chickenpox due to the fact there was no gel coat applied, it all has to come off again

The gaps are all very good....

Looks good in Old English White....

The engine 10 years ago:

The engine now:

It has been running, by the look of an electric fuel pump in the cabin, I'm open to any suggestions as to what to do to the engine, leave it where it is, remove it and strip it or suck 'em and see!

A lot of the initial work will be going over what has already been done, the tricky bit is the interior, sent off to be reupholstered 10 years ago it has gone AWAL! I do have some off another car but I am still missing a front seat, don't know which!

I am sure over the next few months I will be asking quite a lot of questions, this winter I want to get it starting and hopefully stopping!

I´m not sure, who much time and money you are willing to spend, but if that is my car, I would start from the bare chassis.
It is not much work to put it apart and into bits and pieces. The result will be much better than working on shaky foundation.

I can only agree with Joerg, I think you should strip it down, although you may want to leave the roof and rear end moulding in place (from the piccies it looks like all the metal bits at the back are OK) and if the door gaps are good it would seem a pity to tempt providence by assuming it will all go back in the same place. Bearing in mind that you would most likely end up pulling most of it to bits as you go anyway, it will be quicker and easier overall to start with everything accessible, particularly if you are going to replace wiring looms etc.
My project started with the idea that there were just a couple of areas needing attention, but I gradually realised that I was completely dismantling the car anyway, in retrospect I wish I had approached it like that at the beginning.
Anyway, lovely car, the S seems to suit white, what colour interior are you considering ?

Maybe I'm missing something here, but looking at the second picture the body HAS been taken off (through I guess is now re-installed).

Indeed Andy, the body was off, and it would be a shame to remove it again as the door gaps are very good. I will however remove the front end, to aid access to front suspension, and for removal of the engine and gearbox.

Managed to get it turning over this evening and the compression seems ok, but with a bit of variation each time I check a cylinder. After a good dose of oil and diesel into the cylinders I'll give it a day or two before the next test, I also managed to get a spark :D and the oil pressure hit 50 psi :D :D

Dave, not sure about interior yet, still toying with options for exterior as the paint needs to come off because no gel coat was used before it was painted, OEW and a black roof? Then maybe a black interior. I have seen some lovely colours so I need to make a decision soon as I will have to paint the bulk head before I replace the engine, which I haven't removed yet  .

An update on this rather protracted restoration.

Engine and g'box were removed, after the front axle/cross member was also removed, both got a power washing, degreasing and a coat of paint.

Then the front axle was reinstalled fitted with poly bushes, reconditioned steering rack and brakes off my CV8 (I had just fitted Coopercraft to it, so they were spare!)

Carb rebuild kits were obtained from Burlen and after bead blasting the carb bodies I managed to rebuild them a few months ago.

And today I actually got the engine started, albeit on the noisy side, it still needs a little fettling, leaked a bit of water and seemed to get a bit hot! I need to set the timing and get the mixture somewhere near right.

Now I need to fill the brake system with fluid (front half only!), refit the drive shaft, rig up a gear linkage (lost the bloody clevis yoke) attach some sort of a seat and then I can take it for a drive around the field!!

That would be a sight worth seeing, Justin! Make sure someone is on hand to video it and stick it on Youtube - I'll put a link into jensen541.com if you do make a video.

Having now replaced the head gasket, too many water leaks from sitting idle for too long, bores look good and dropped the sump also:

And then it was time to launch:

A few laps of the field, with a Springer in hot pursuit, still a bit of fine tuning to do and then onto painting the boby, fitting the fuel tank, wiring.....OMG!!
