Spark plugs
This should be a simple question but either i'm looking in the wrong places or just not trying hard enough.
What would be the correct plugs for my 383 (fairly stock at the moment). I would prefer to fit NGK.
Thanks in advance,
Ian

NGK BP5S is recommended for 383 and 440 engines, sixties and early seventies. Before "Lean burn" and all that.

NGK's hmm,I wouldn't, in my experience the Jensen (mine anyway) don't like them & will kill any plug that isn't a champion.
Not many people are stocking champion for any car anymore, the Jensen suppliers all do though.
I get mine from the states J12 YC champion is what your after,or autolite's which again some Jensen people might keep.

Im with you on this Crazy.
I have had Champions fail on me in under 1500 miles.
I am not sure if it is something to do with the fuel injection or they are just rubbish but I stopped using them several years ago.
Autolites comes with a 36,000 miles guarantee so that is good enough for me.

My vote is for NGK. Probably more expensive but "fit & forget" as mentioned...
I've fitted them to every vehicle I've owned since I discovered them in mid 70's sometime. Never once had an issue, that includes endurance race bikes, where we ran whole seasons on them! (they were race variants though).

NGK BP5HS are excellent for 383. Running since 45.000km in my CV8 - no problems and still good performance.

My car has been fitted with Bosh spark plugs, I would like to put new plugs in my MK111 but looking at the above comments I am now not sure which way to go.
I have never been keen on fit and forget as most things in life degrade over time, just like me

I agree with what you are saying but if you note down the mileage you fit what ever you decide on it eliminates another possible reason for a bad running car.
The Champions were the preferd choice a few years back but now the Autolites,NGK or Bosch seem to be a better bet.

Hi all,
i just bought some Autolite 85 in the states (advance autoparts).
I never saw sooo poorly manufactured plugs till now.
They were "made in China" (stated on the box) and looked worse than expected: excentric ceramic isolators, no even gap between electrodes because they are not welded in proper position etc.
Lets hope they will work but next time i will buy NGKs again. I was happy with the NGK quality with all my bikes till now - even with very demanding high performance two strokers in the seventies.

Re: Spark plugs
So after reading this post I bought 8 NKG BP5HS but they are longer than the old ones. Is a Interceptor mk2 with 383 engine and in original state. Will the pistons shoot out the new spark plugs?

Re: Spark plugs
I think you have the wrong NGK's.
If you cross ref Autolite AP85 you get the following NGK's, Some of these are Iridium but you will need to check.
NGK3348
NGK5485
NGK7293
NGK7355
NGKXR45IX
NGKXR45VX
NGKXR5IX
NGKXR5VX
NGK5485
You might be OK for clearance on the ones you have but I would be very careful of using long threaded plugs as owners of some Ford V8's will know, the carbon builds up on the threads and when you come to remove them in a year or so the carbon falls off and can damage the bores.

Re: Spark plugs
Hi Fredrik,
i second Steve's statement that you got the wrong NGKs.
I am currently running on NGK XR5 again. These are just standard NGKs for about 30 Euro per set of 8 - no superduper Iridiums.
