I should be possible to see numbers, oil pressures and oil levels, there should be some difference as drainage affects windage. Slower drain back might reduce windage. Also bits of paint falling off, chemicals leaching out of the paint into the oil and a smoother surface allowing less heat transfer are obvious negatives if they occur which they probably don't with special paints and experts doing it. The paint also seals impurities into the casting, stopping them getting into the oil and dissolving out. Think quartz particles from casting coming loose as pores expand and doing a nice job on the bearings. Some engine builders claim they have seen casting sand coming out of high mileage blocks during the hot tanking process.

It does look like Dave has removed casting flash from the valley, which I would imagine removes stress points.

I assume that all of these engines have windage trays or crank scrapers, so that windage would be well controlled. Controlling windage by inhibiting drain back would be asking for oil starvation, IMHO.

Looking back at these photos, that V8 with stamped rockers, all black and iron heads, brass core plugs. Heads painted inside. Looks fantastic. Can't really argue :D

You have got me looking at Dave's bicycle now. Is that a petrol tank strapped to the crossbar? Can't he leave anything alone?

Doesn't look like a petrol tank, looks more like a JATO bottle.

Wow!
