FF front suspension

Post by Per »

Asking here as well in case any former FF owners are not reading FF subforum.

The upper and lower front suspension arms have different part numbers between mk 1 and mk 2. Toe out is also different as was wheel width and tyre spec.

Does anybody know if geometry is different between mk 1 and 2 parts?

And what are the experience of the group: Mk 1 with wider wheels and tyres, should Mk 2 Toe Out be used?

Mine is adjusted to Mk 2 spec but straight line stability is not brilliant, maybe a bit less Toe Out per mk 1 is better?

Important notice, Camber on RH side is 1 deg positive too much. And Caster LH is 2.2 deg pos too much. Caster could be adjustment but Camber worryingly is not adjustable so possibly damage?

Have you tried calling "FF Dave" - Dave Barnett?
He might know about the differences between MK1 and MK2 off the top of his head.

That was next on my list. However, I have found that a RH component in the upper LH arm has been forced into position leaving the whole thing under tension. I suspect that a correct part will fix the Camber. Then I will adjust Caster on both sides.

I also have a set of mk 3 alloys with new tyres so Toe Out adjustments will wait until I have tried those wheels.

It definitely looks like the LH side is wrong, but can somebody please send me a picture of their upper arm in position showing the inner ends.

Perfect Martin! It shows the straight upper link half and confirms that the LH position in mine indeed contains a RH item.

The number listed on the web site is the same as the one I have but, I also have a mobile number for Dave Barnett too.
I'd prefer not to ring the number listed without a good reason for me to call him.
Perhaps other people might know if his landline is disconnected / discontinued?

Dave Barnett says his phone line has been the same for years, and as far as he knows it's working fine.

Hi Per,

Home no still the same and appears to be working fine. Saw your Email but haven't had time to
think about it as i've been elsewhere for a few days. Not long finished helping Melanie clear Colins workshop and
now i have my mothers house to do! .

Apart from the shock spring platform being raised on the FF2 i can't remember any major differences. i have some drawings here
somewhere, i'll have a look tomorrow and contact you one way or another!.

Dave.
