V reg interceptor on EBay

Post by George Holmes »

Does anybody know how this 1973 interceptor managed to get a 1980 registration plate allocated to it?

Most likely it was imported back to the UK from somewhere and the original date of manufacture was not available and so the local vehicle licensing office gave it a number from their current issue.

This would make sense as it says it has history dating from 1981 🤷🏻‍♂️

indeed imported from Jersey and was a nice example. It was sold as Royal blue by P.Jarvis to Micheal Davey, one of our clan- He was quite a character!
Have some proper phots of it when active in our area till he sold it, A great memory is he and uncle dick (541R) banging on about how I was missing out on jellied ells at Greenwich!!

Thanks folks, I was always under the impression that an older car could not have a number plate making it appearing to be newer than it actually is.

That's true of older cars already registered but an import becomes somewhat more complicated...

YOU cannot put a registration on a car to make it appear newer than it actually is. This is a rule that came about after year indicators were introduced in 1964. However, when local vehicle licensing offices in the 1960s, 1970s and into the early 1980s were faced with registering an imported car the only registration numbers they often had available were for the current registration year, previous years "books" had either all been used up or closed. Or they were not able to confirm the date of original registration or manufacture and so used the current year.

Only £26k provisional bid in a very sluggish and uninspiring auction.
