C-V8 104/2252 For Sale

Post by John Staddon »

104/2252 has been undergoing a long restoration, but sadly the owner has passed away without finishing the work.

The car is for sale.

Photos are attached and I have been given the following information.

The car appears to be complete

Floors and cills have been replaced.

An A833 manual conversion has been carried out, but the original auto box and prop shaft are still with the car.

An offer above £12K would secure a sale

Call Mark Lillingington on 0743 6806149

More photos are available from Mark.

I have older photos of the car and it did appear to be complete and very original and provided nothing has been thrown away it should still be that way, albeit some of it is in boxes.

It is an opporunity to restore C-V8 after the hard work has been done to the chassis, provided always it has been done correctly.

The car is in Maidenhead.

Seems a very fair asking price for what seems to be an unmolested and complete restoration project. Much better than the three basket cases that came up for auction this year for about £6k each. Always a bit daunting though to buy something in dismantled state but for the right DIY enthusiast it could be a very rewarding project. I would love to see it when its finished.

That’s two CV8 Mk IIs that have come for sale within 10 miles of me in the last week that I never knew existed!

It does look in reasonable nick on the surface, but I wonder how complete the manual box installation is? There doesn't seem to be a clutch pedal visible in the driver's side interior photo, but that may just be due to the angle of the photo. I guess if the worst came to the worst you (hopefully) have all the bits to reinstate the auto (which I suspect might lead to a better driving experience anyway!).

I'm puzzled about the bolts in the section behind the driver's door. I can think of reasons why someone might have removed that bit of bodywork, but can't quite see why they would have refixed it with bolts/screws!

It is an unfinished restoration and if you look closely at the interior shot you can see that the sheet metal forming the heel board part of the toe box isn't actually there, so you are looking in to the triangular box section, it would be difficult to finish the metalwork in this area with pedals in the way so I would suppose none of the pedals are in place, the brake pedal obviously isn't as it is on top of the clear plastic storage box in another photo.

Also, I would say this has not been a complete body off restoration and it looks like the front end has been removed to allow welding, as have the sills, but the front of the rear wheel arch has been exposed for repairs by simply cutting the bottom of the rear wing off half way up the wheel arch, the bolts are holding the bottom of the wing in place and there are probably plates behind the glass fibre that the bolts tighten on to. I am not suggesting it would have been left like that, it's a bit like tacking a steel wing in place before adding a continuous weld, just in this case the glass fibre needs refinishing before the bolts can be removed.

Price is in excess of...

Yes, price in excess of though I can’t imagine a bidding war breaking out. The gearbox change is a nuisance to unpick if the auto us wanted which I think is better suited to the car. Hope it finds a good home

I hope so too. I admit that if I'd looked just a bit more closely at the under-bonnet photo it would have been obvious that no pedal box is present!

My comments weren't intended to denigrate - if it were mine I probably would have used gaffer tape instead of bolts, but we all make different decisions...

If I were buying I would want to check carefully that all essential parts are present in the boxes but, if so, the price doesn't seem way off the mark.

I see this car seems to have now turned up for sale at Classic Automobiles Worldwide in Petersfield at £POA. One assumes that the original offers over £12k has now more or less doubled, with nothing further done on the restoration!

Andrew Cassar used to do this, buy a restoration project, put it back together as far as he could, give it a clean, called detailing it nowadays, and then try to sell it for treble the buying price. But that is how dealers make money and the original seller could have done the same thing but wanted rid of the car without any hassle.
