Blue 541, ex-Barrie Price.

Post by VFK44 »

The advert references the late Barrie Price, and his connections to the Jensen factory.
I covered this on jensen541.com some years ago, with the life story of the 541 engineer Colin Riekie.
https://www.jensen541.com/BiographyColi ... Page_1.htm

The car is currently for sale at the Classic and Sportscar Centre, N. Yorkshire, for £65,995.

This car was on show and for sale at the Goodwood Revival.
Most people I spoke to didn't like the colour at all...

"Beautifully restored in its original Botticelli blue colour"
I like it, is it the original colour (not Botticelli Blue I'm familiar with)?

Looks like there are a few issues with this car (rear lights wrong type for this early body moulding, boot lid fit, spare wheel carrier, paint colour, interior mixture of colours, fuel pump probably too small to deliver enough fuel and the price does not reflect the current market…) but what do I know!

Dave

Ps, I haven’t seen the car, only the photos.

Hi all

I believe that this car was in Denmark in 1978 owned by a JOC Member - see Magazine Nos 26 and 27

Then for sale in JOC Magazine 50 07.1982 in Harlow - Essex for £1,000
I am sure that Dave has far more knowledge than me on this car

According to this blurb, the JOC knows all about this car!

Chris, I knew barrie price had restored the car for his niece. I had given them an (in my opinion inflated) insurance valuation based on photographs a few years ago. I have also debunked the vendor family’s claim that the car had only ever been owned by two families - the sales text that you have copied is typical, over inflated rubbish to “big up” the car being advertised.

I think Stephen Carter may have a bit more information about any involvement with Colin reikie during the 541 development. I have not seen the photograph that is described (as far as I remember).

The fuel pump is a Land Rover SI / MGTD / Morris Minor etc. low pressure puller pump. Not enough capacity if you want to use all the power. It should be a double low pressure puller pump which is usually fitted in front of the engine on the right hand side I believe. These are hard to find and expensive. I built one in the past with an electronic conversion which was a bit of a disaster due to the poor quality of the conversion sets. From then on I stuck to points with a transil/TVS which makes them dual polarity as a bonus.
The double high pressure pusher pump looks very similar but has stronger internal springs to push out the diaphragms and an air chamber to damp the pulses. This pump is fairly common and a lot cheaper. Used on V-12 Jaguar/Rolls-Royce/Bentley and others.
This pump is easy to convert to a low pressure puller pump by replacing the internal springs for the ones of a puller pump.

The fuel pump on this early car should be a camshaft driven AC pump. What Kees has described would be correct for a 541R but not a 541S which is also an AC pump.

With regard to the rear lights, both Keith Lee's old car, and the cream one with engine tuned by Dennis Welch, had Lucas L542 lights set into the earlier body shape. Is there a reason why this was not appropriate for the 'Barry Price' car?

Re. rear lights, my first 541, chassis 22/5206, had the two round Lucas lights mounted on an oval alloy plate. The car in question may have had the later style one piece lights changed by a previous owner, as I do know of a few early 541 owners who did just that.
Re. fuel pump position, a better site for it is on the cooler side of the engine, not the exhaust side.
