Interceptor Door Handles

Post by Clive Bishop »

Just a question, my son has been making at his work parts for some alfas and other historic racing cars - steering, suspension parts but also stainless steel door parts including door handles.

I know that the Interceptor door handles are not easily chromed or replaced, but assuming he can 3D scan a outside facing door handle assembly and then produce it from a single billet, is there any interest in them?

Robey's etc have them as NLA and so just a question and we don't know if it is possible yet, but no point looking into it if no interest.

I would consider a set for my FF if priced reasonably.
I wish I'd bought them when they were available but only bought one set for my MK3...

OK well there is possibly interest, but first step is to find a set that are not marked and as good as possible to scan into the system befoe looking at brass which is then chromed or stainless steel.

Anyone volunteering a set, as mine are on the car and currently have no intention of taking them off :D

Just to be clear this will be the outer surround and pull handle only for both sides.

Once the scans are done he will have a better idea of feasibility to a high standard... scanning a set that have clearly defined lines on the face of them is the biggest challenge...

I'll keep you posted.

Clive, the problem with Stainless if they're being cast is that they shrink from molten to solid, therefore the molds have to be made bigger to allow for shrinkage, I only know this as I have spoken to the guy that made the last batches maybe 15years ago that were cast from stainless  .
I do have a brass set from a Vignale car if you or your son want's to talk to me about it then you can email me on grant@grantsvanillacustard.com and I can give you/son my phone number on the email correspondence too.. Kindness always..Grant :)

Hi Grant,

No they wont be cast, but looking at stainless steel or aluminium billet that can then be chromed in the case of aluminium.. as they make parts for aerospace then tolerances are very very fine and hence why they now make engineering parts and milled items for a few companies for their historic cars they look after ..... this was just a conversation between him and I and initial feedback from his team.

Have a original set being dropped off at my home for him to look at and scan and see about the programming and then feasibility and costing. If its all good then it will be a limited test run and then if more is needed then the company will then take it in house and see about ROI on a production line basis, but on demand.

Just as a update, the door handle units thanks to Charlie Ware, are being scanned.

There has been a delay as Airbus suddenly decided they wanted 1000 custom parts so everything had to be dropped for them!

I will come back and post here when then the outcome is ready and options for the next steps.
