Tom 88 440 rebuild
Tom 88 440 rebuild
Here is Tom 88s block, had to have 4 cylinder sleeves not just the 1.It is now prepped for building eg cam turns nice in the block and crank and main housings have been checked for alignment and all is good.

Nice one Dave.. You are the Man, so you have to fit new liners and then bore them including the other four I take it do you?..Can you buy the liners to fit any bore size then Dave..Great to hear from you Dave

Re: Tom 88 440 rebuild
Yes Grant bore the block to the OD of the liner then press in. And you can buy liners to suit most applications. Depending on how bad the damage is to the bore depends on how much material has to be took out increasing the wall thickness of the liner. The bore which had the worst damage had to have a thicker liner than the other 3 which had a thinner liner installed.

To get from that rusty lump of iron that was dropped of a couple of months ago to this is quite some achievement!

Re: Tom 88 440 rebuild
First class job my quest to drive a Jensen gets closer by the month instead of by the years thanks Dave.
Re: Tom 88 440 rebuild
I was up at Daves workshop today, I was looking at all his machinery..Extremely clever man that does all his own engineering, he had made Jigs that will let him carry out work on engine blocks that other builders would not even consider bothering to do to the block, in my opinion that is why I feel he is the best man to go to
Here is the jig and press that Dave used to press the liners into Toms Block(this is not Toms block but the process and machinery that was used) >>>

A recent picture of toms engine during the build usual cam and flat top pistons with 440 source rocker gear as upto date still no issues using this valve train.

This ^^^^^^ is more of Daves meticulous superb workmanship..Dave helped me build a wicked 400ci mopar V8 which I am about to write up on here with all the pics of the progress..He is the man to use for Engine Building..
In my opinion he is the best and I have done my research over the years of being involved with these engines..It's a Big Up from me

Re: Tom 88 440 rebuild
Set off on Friday morning with tom88’s 440 engine to the dyno testing. Engine was then unhitched on arrival and craned into the dyno room where before being bolted to the test frame. The engine had the correct fly wheel and bell housing attached. Engine then in position things have to be checked eg has it got oil! And the correct break in oil.
Also give the engine a good looking over just to double check all is ok.Then it’s on to the exhaust headers making sure these are sealed with correct gaskets and no plug leads to get melted In the process. Then on to carburation making sure you have the correct carb cfm’s to suit your engines cui. Once that is sorted ignition needs to be coupled and ignition timing needs to be checked .Then on to throttle and fuel is connected and a few other gadgets. Then making sure the engine had a good seeing over and everything connected we were ready to start her up. On initial start up ignition was ok and oil was at a good steady mid 50 psi increasing with more rpms, Engine is then kept at a mid 2000 rpm for the cam to run in for 20 mins.Keeping an eye on oil pressure noises leaks and other things that can occur while the engine is running. During the cam break in engine was turned off after 5mins to lift the lids on the heads to check rockers and valve train were getting correct lubrication.Everything looked good and engine restarted to further break in of the cam.Once the cam was ran in some fine tuning was needed to the carb and ignition. Then we were happy the engine was ready for a few shorts pulls of the throttle then onto loading the engine up with load and then taken to 5000 rpm for the final figures with a nice 401 HP at 4700 rpm pulling 503 LB-FT at 3400 rpm.Very happy with those results for mildly modified 440 and sure Tom will be .This has been an interesting build and great example to show those few who said it couldn’t be done.

Re: Tom 88 440 rebuild
WOW, Thats over 500FtLb of Torque from a Breathed on 440, like that program name on the TV "How do they do that", I'm always prizing Dave to tell me "How does he do that"..But, he never lets on and I always thought he liked me!!, I think he does, but he has tricks up his sleeve that keeps to his chest, I'm not sure that's a proper saying but I've used it anyway..This is to you Mr Gilliver and Co pilot Jo(Daves Son)>>..Maybe when he chucks the towel in he'll tell me his secrets,..but he can't chuck the towel in quite yet because he's doing a 440 for me now
Good on you Dave & Co,Tom..You should absolutely over the moon because having torque like that you can earn money by betting your grandson to try to grab a taped on £50 note to the dash and if he can grab it while you hit that throttle he can have it, he'll be like this >>, but in reality it'll be a
