Those Commer vans were awful to drive, especially if empty, and wet, all the weight over or in front of the front wheels, hit the brakes and the rear went all over the place. Never try to do a handbrake turn in them either, it works on the front wheels :shock:

Lovely cars. We had 5 of them, the first one an 1961 R3 with a smaller engine, 3-speed, 6V and no rear side windows which I bought from a colleague at BOC Harlow. I had to park it at the top of a hill as the starter did not work initially. I took it apart and I found totally burned out contacts in the starter solenoid which I repaired by building them up using silver welding rod.
The last one was a R4 GTL 1983 with an R6 engine with a bit more power, 45HP versus 34HP, Koni shocks, Alpine aluminium wheels, wider tyres, slightly lowered, lots of sound deadening, Volvo 343 seats. I loved them to bits, perfect cars but for the rust. Comfortable, very sure footed, frugal, versatile.

A neighbour still has one in daily use. Always parked in the street, she manages to keep (most) rust away for a few years now.
Before the annual car inspection was introduced, a friend owned and drove a very rotten R4. The seats were mounted on wooden beams across the floor because the original mounting locations on the floor were no longer there :D

Not really ‘on the road’, just a few pictures from the Brooklands Car Show yesterday.
I’ve seen the Interceptor before (only one there that I saw). Just a few that caught my eye:

Sounds like our second R4. I bought the car in ca. 1978 on a rainy day as a first car for my wife Anne Marie who just got her driving licence in Ireland (but that is another story). It looked quite presentable on the street side. The car was up against a wet hedge so I did not look properly underneath at that side. Hands were shaken and the deal was done. Driving home felt a bit odd and wobbly. The next day showed me why. On the "hedge" side the front suspension beam was totally rotten and the suspension was just hanging on to a few shards of rusted metal and was mainly kept more or less in place by the torsion bar. Red Face!!!!
I drove the car very gently to the workshop of my then employers (TNO-Wegtransportmiddelen Delft, similar to BSI/TRRL) where I spent the evenings of the next weeks removing the engine/gearbox and the complete front end of the chassis and welding in new chassis legs.
The car was driven by Anne Marie for about 6 years. After some years the drivers door fell out and hung on to one hinge, so I dared to mention that it was about time for another car.
However no such thing. SWMBO just put the door back in place, locked it and said she could use the passenger door. Luckily soon after the APK, the Dutch equivalent of the MOT, came into force and the car was given to the neighbouring girls, 11 an 16 years old, who learned to drive in it on the fields behind the house until the engine gave up a few years later.

Last evening's event at the open bicycle track here in Zurich. Once a year they allow cars, three-weelers and motorcycles on the track. The curves are so steep that you can barely climb them, the circuit is only 333m long. Quite impressive...

Thanks Simon. There was also a bicycle pacemaker race (Steherrennen). I timed them, it took the fastest one 16 seconds for a round which if I calculated correctly is about 80kmh!!! I was standing infield watching the motorcycles, following one guy who was going incredibly fast and after 3 rounds I was dizzy. The sidecars where also crazy.

Last year Bernhard from our club was invited with his FMR TG500, the centrifugal force pressed the wheels against the body and damaged his car.
