Re: Colour Finally Going On
Hi Richie,
Looking good. What colour are you applying? I assume that this is the first coat applied by hand. Are you following up with subsequent by airbrush?
Incidentally did you apply any leather feed/conditioner before the colourant?
Phil

A black light at the end of the tunnel
If you'd have asked me 30 minutes ago if I was going to spray the next coats on, I would, 100% have said yes.
But I've just sponged a second coat on and, though I need to have a proper look (especially in natural light), the results of that seem very encouraging. So much so in fact that I'm not sure what spraying would achieve.
I didn't apply any feed. I didn't want to risk it. Having worked hard to remove oils and other contaminants, I didn't fancy putting oils back in. But I will do so in a few months.

Re: Colour Finally Going On
Hi Richie
Looking very good.
Don't forget when you apply the top coast (gloss, matt or some combination) add a small amount of the black colourant/dye which can some time go a little milky. Furniture Clinic said it takes about 5 days for the colourant to fully cure. Not sure about the top coat.

Re: Colour Finally Going On
Looking at the 'smooth' parts of the rear seat, (the surround of it if you like) in good daylight revealed it didn't look as good as I hoped.
So, it was back out with the thinners to removed the colour and I did it again, this time with the sprayer and it looks much better.
I'll leave it all a few days to dry now, then its on with the finishes and refit into the car.
Then I can move to the front which will basically be sealing the replacement front seats i have and doing the door cards.

Well done Richie, I sprayed mine with a Woolies kit and I was very pleased with the results.

Re: Colour Finally Going On
All looking good, but it is a slow process, it only takes 5-10 mins to do a coat, then ideally leave it an hour to do another etc etc etc. Leave it a week then top coat, another top coat etc etc etc.
Not that time consuming to do, but have something else to do in between the massive waiting times that are plentiful.
I couldn't do it for a living it would drive me mad

Re: Colour Finally Going On
That was exactly my process on the weekend... spray a coat then cut the front lawn. Spray a coat then cut the back... spray, paint replacement shed doors... There's significantly more waiting than doing. It kinda took all day to complete an hours work.
It's a sort of enjoyable process - so far I'm definitely glad I'm doing it, and would encourage anyone thinking about it to do, but it's not something I'm in any rush to repeat.

Hi Richie
I always use a hair dryer to accelerate the drying as suggested by Furniture Clinic. Works for me.

Aye, but allowing the sunshine to do the work allowed me to earn brownie points getting other domestic tasks done too
Re: Colour Finally Going On
A busy but productive day today.
Just the door cards to do.
Unless it's the case that the rear upper panels should also be black??

Re: Colour Finally Going On
Leave the panels in the colour they are currently. It'll make the rear end and seats seem lighter and more airy.
