Its up and running, ready for the first outing to Droitwich canal festival tomorrow. Engine now has about 2 hours run on it, did a 10 mile round trip this evening, it is running a bit rich, and needs a bit more fettling but not too bad. In hind sight I should have sent the carb off to Dave Barnett, so it would be spot on for the fire up. I was a little p*****d off as there was a pool of oil under the car, but after close examination, it was the sump plug not fully tightened up :D Brakes now work but pedal travel is excessive, suspect I need to re adjust the servo to master cylinder rod to improve this. All in all quite happy, will see what the next month of use brings with a few hundred shake down miles on it. Bonnet guttering still needs painting to finish it off which i'll do in the next few days.
Just noticed I've painted the oil filler cap black, is this right, or should it be silver like the rocker covers?

Had a good run out to Droitwich on Saturday, and had lots of comments on how nice and clean the engine bay is, so all that work has paid off. Had a couple of dribbles from manifold studs which is annoying, and have now pulled them out, applied PTFA and high temp silicone to them, so they should be OK now. Wasn't happy with the brakes, it felt like i was driving with the old Dunlop calipers and pads again, so after further investigation, found servo to master cylinder rod adjustment to be spot on, so it had to be air in the system. Clamped off both front calipers and pedal was really good, so air must be trapped in them. The four pots I have, have the feed pipe going in at the top of the inner caliper, and a pipe at the bottom linking the inner and outer parts, with the bleed nipple at the top of the outer. I suspected air was trapped at the top of the inner caliper, and no matter how I bled them, (standard pumping of the pedal, pressure feeding from master cylinder, vacuum pumping from caliper) I had no joy. In the end I set up a pipe to a fluid reservoir at the nipple, and disconnected the feed pipe to the caliper, and watched the fluid flow from the nipple, through the caliper and out, together with quite a bit of air. When there was no air coming out, I reconnected the pipe with fluid flowing from both directions under gravity, so no air could enter. I did this for both sides, and hey presto, the brakes are now sorted, and better than they have ever been. When I need to bleed them again, I will modify the pipe arrangement by feeding into the inner caliper from the bottom, and take the link pipe from the top of the inner, to the bottom of the outer, so the air can't get trapped at the top of the inner.

Kevin now that you have engine back in car is there any chance you could send me a couple of pics of rear mufflers and rear pipe arrangement under back axle. Just need to see the clearance. Believe it was a 2" system right through on my chassis no 115/3227. I am trying to work on the original setup. Cheers

Hi Rod,
was going to jack the arse up and take some photos of my pipes and muffs  , but ran out of time. Will try next time.
Spent most of the day tweaking a few things. repainted the bonnet gutter, not too happy as I had the paint matched, but it is quite a bit lighter than the body work, but looks better than before. I've had a niggly problem with the throttle pedal occasionally not returning fully which I have now sorted. On strip down the pedal was attached to the the bracket with a bolt and 2 nuts locked together, with spring washers as spacers. The bracket wasn't quite straight either, now straightened out, and a clevis pin inseted and lubricated. No play and a smoother action. :D Trying to get her to run a bit smoother, but need to get the carb rebuilt properly, so off to Dave Barnet it will go when convenient. Something's not right with it, as it still ticks over, and appears to be running rich even when the idle screws are fully home. :(
Painted the filler cap too, silver to match the rocker covers. :D

At Dudley Zoo and Castle today, quite a few tasty cars, and was parked next to a very good MK1 Capri, originally V4 GT, but now 3.9 V8, which being bright yellow drew a lot of admirers, who never even noticed the quality west Brom product

Not much done on the old girl since the engine rebuild, have now got 1000 miles on the clock, and it is running in nicely. Have noticed a gradual increase in power and smoothness of delivery since rebuild, which will presumably get better over the next few thousand miles. Was initially quite disappointed in the power, with a tight engine, and new torque converter, but the smile on my face is bigger than ever now. I will have to be a bit more careful with the right foot, as I've already unstuck the rear wheels at 40MPH on a slightly damp surface, with just a gentle caress of the loud pedal
Am giving the front seats some TLC as they were looking a little tired and I had a 3inch tear in the passenger seat. I can't believe it has been 4½ years since they were dyed and have had 12,000 miles of arses sat on them since. Am using a kit from "The Furniture Clinic" which is really good, and they have matched the colour perfectly.
Been spending most of my time (and money) on the Cortina, but nice to just have the Jensen on the key ready to go when I want. :D

Not much really to show, have now got the whole underside stonechipped, and have been getting the engine bay back to bare metal, and just need a front valance( on back order) to complete the welding and body. Have been cajoled by my local car club to display the engine at the forthcoming Restoration Show at the NEC, so am busy sourcing with parts for that. It will be a cosmetic restoration of the engine, but am now getting parts for it that I will need in the future for the rebuild proper when machining will need to be done, etc. If you're intending going the the show, it will be on the Stourbridge Prewar & Classic Car Club stand, I'll be there. Spent the weekend at Simonds Yat, camping, and messing about on the river Wye. The Interceptor's boot had plenty of room for the camping kit, and was arguably the best car on the campsite :D Funny how everybody stopped what they were doing and looked over when I started the engine and drove off the site today.

Have been contemplating my interior again, for quite a while now, my stereo system is woeful, and have invested in various items such as amplifier, dab radio, graphic equaliser and 8 track. I will hopefully set about fitting of said items, with the only bits on display being the 8 track, or the DAB unit and equaliser only when the glove box is opened from where it will all be controlled. With some clever electronics, the 8 track will run through the amp too, as the speaker outputs from the Voxson, will be converted to RCA inputs for the amp. Whilst fitting all of this, most of the dash will need to come out, so will be engaging the the 8 inch long fingers with 4 knuckles on each to attack the wing nuts, but will also be swapping the the walnut dash panels for leather covered ones, something I have been thinking of since finding out my MK1 had this as an option from new. It will certainly be different, whether I will like it , I don't know, but I can always put the wood panels back in if I don't. I spent an enjoyable afternoon in the garden drinking some cider covering the spare panels I have obtained in leather, which is black but looks decidedly grey in the photos.

Interesting adventure Kevin!
Never knew leather was an option for these veneered metal plates. Was it an option from the beginning onwards or later in the series?

Hi Dion,

I think anything was an option if you were prepared to pay for it. In Mr Calver's Genome, my car has a note which states "As well as the leather covered fascia panel, the client provided a child seat to be covered in the same leather as the interior". So that is why I am having a go at this, as we think it was the only one done. It hasn't cost much, just the panels through the club and a piece of scrap leather from the trimmer who did my Cortina seats. If I'm not happy with it, I can revert to the wood, but will leave it in for others to see for a while and comment. It might be interesting to see what the child seats were like back in '68, and see if I could get one of those too. There is the remainder of what looks like a small seatbelt fixing in the little cubby in the back seat.
