FF for sale at Cotswold collector cars

Post by Eddie »

This is the FF that didn’t appear to sell at the Goodwood FOS auction earlier this year.

http://www.cotswoldcars.com/currentstock/jensenff

Some good photos of the car from the original auction site.

Why that did not sell is beyond me its a beauty, pretty sure Jensen prices have stalled and are falling again, great shame,,

It does look like a very nice car, once briefly owned by Eddie Shah (a UK newspaper magnate).
It's missing its Maxarett by the looks of the photo's but yes, it seems that prices have dipped recently.

That FF looks like a nice early car, one of the first batch of 50. Original spec cars generally seem to be getting the money. Perhaps the missing Maxaret has put off a few buyers? If you have never had an FF I could see that being a factor. While we might mentally knock off £2K (assuming it has the FF servo and gearbox mounted Maxaret sender unit still fitted), to a non specialist, they might think they could be looking at £5K or £20K? Who is to say?

Interesting that they have priced it at the lower end of what the auctioneers had for a guide. Buyers can now check out the car at their leisure.

The dealer is only about 30 minutes from where I live and a number of friends recommend them. I'd hazard a guess it's up for sale on commission by the owner.

Has anyone seen this car?

Could be an effect of the light but the paint looks blown in on the front and rear wings and the passenger door. The inside (bottoms) of the doors clearly show rust. Passenger door is high, large gap underneath and swage line does not line up. Gap under the rear hatch is not consistent see drivers side rear corner. Chrome top of rear quarter window looks as though it needs redoing, rear Jensen badge is not put on correctly, up at both ends, front seats need some preservation or redoing, colour of them is different to door cards and general trim, drivers floor mat looks worn through. Gaps are not consistent around car. Plus missing FF bits.

I now some of these things might be 10 minutes to sort out, but chrome, paint and trim are material costs, and that is assuming there in nothing lurking below the mismatched paint

I agree those things might not be 10 minutes to sort out, and might be real problems, and that we haven't seen the car. I note the steering wheel is darker varnish than normal, perhaps the dark blue on the lower dash has been retrimmed. I would definitely prefer the old mats, old boot carpet (which does look original) to new items. I would rather have the odd trim colours than someone attempting to match it up, and chrome wise, I would not want stuff redone and messed about with. The passenger door does look a bit dodgy, but it could well be the original badly refitted. The Maxaret may actually be with the car still, we would need to ask. Agree it is a bit of a crime not treating the seats with hide food, but that is all I would want done, nothing more. The car is 50 years old. Not sure about the Jensen badge on the back being wrong. If that was all done, and not 110% perfect to my satisfaction, and what is ever perfect, it would put me off if anything. Rather the seller found a maxaret unit, and included it with the sale in a box with all the paperwork meticulously compiled and a copy of Ulrics book. I get the feeling that the trim on these earlier cars was a bit more fragile than the later ones and Mk2s. Perfect FFs have sold north of £100K I understand, and this is one of the first 50 and a bit special and deserves not to be messed with unnecessarily in my view. Rather haggle a bit and try your luck.

I don't know much about FF's or indeed very much at all. I read the comments re condition and looked hard at all the pictures for "Flaws". My SP has a boot lid that is a bit high and am informed by a local hoodie that Jensen never had a distinguised record for fit and was normal and he said my rear boot gap was OK. Have taken it to several good panel experts but they all said "learn to love her as is". Gaps in my 46 year old panels have never been an issue and Richard Calver could unlock passenger door by sliding his hand between door jamb and commented it was very convenient and amazing and don't worry about it and "let's have a look at my goat's condition". 8) My rear badge is a bit high due to the local failed petri dish experiment trying to lever it off.
Honestly you guys! The friggin FF is 50 years old and I bet you have a few faults too. The price seems reasonable and what do you want. Concours? I will commend your cumulative observations though. Talk about tight arse judging. Eagle eyes all. Who among us has a car without sin? Lift the hoodies. Sit down Martin!! Kenny38 8)

Well said Kenny, i have tried to encourage the bigging up of the Jensen mark, but alas it falls on deaf ears, and i know for a fact Jensen prices are hurt, they are falling, this FF looks a good car not concors by any means but certainly worth 80-90k , and you be surprised how many of the Jensens in this club are very below par condition wise but its never mentioned, i went to view an SP yesterday white car black interior tho poor guy has a claimed 100 thou plus in this thing, its been to 3 Jensen marque specialists being restored attended to etc the car is garbage, so many areas so wrong unfinished parts missing or wrong. has a had a body restore within the last three years not the best by any means poor fit finish the real kicker it has no sills when you do the ,,,, screwdriver test, jesus christ, interior retrim the cheapest possible leather used i could not tell if its vinyl its bloody close to you sit on the seats rather than in them,, all the door chromes and seat chromes done in black powder coat what the fck, restored car awfull, has had an engine rebuild done 200 miles back from the place runs like crap gutless wonder no sixpack fitted was told they are crap don't work the guy would pay the money he wanted the best, easy way out for builders wack a poxy repop 4 barrel on and go,no sound deadner under the bonnet itself and or inner wings 100 grand remember all these items matter surely this guy does not know he is lead by those in the know he has been ripped for sure felt sorry for the guy, my white int 11 on the bay now at 32k is a better all round car, i was dissapointed wanted a deal at it but had to walk,, disgrace that there are Jensen specialist people involved in this car and its so bad they should have helped him advised on missing parts pointed him in the right direction to get a good car at the end of his massive money pit,,,,It seems an easy way to relieve people of there hard earned is,,,,,, you need uprated brakes,, you need 17" wheels , you need coil over rear shocks,, you need aluminium heads,, you need a big radiator with upgraded fans,,,, its just an easy bolt in way to get a big payday, its still the same rotter car,I told him should have gone to Rejen yes he would have paid strong money and had to wait but come the finished product would have been a new SP not this rotter he has now,,

Thank gawd I read your post, Duncan -

My door chromes have some surface rust and I was wondering what to do about it. Now I know that it must be chromed.

I do think it’s important.... that’s why it has taken longer than it should for me to take action!

My comments were in response to the view posted by Duncan that the fact that this car did not find a new home demonstrated prices were falling. This car was guided at £80k to £120k by Bonhams. When one adds buyers premiums say £90k to £140K - this was a very big ask.

Whilst we are told that £20k was spent recomissioning the vehicle (a lot of money for the list of items done) no indication was given of the state of the bodywork or even if the side tubes have been done.

It looked nice at a quick glance but from scrutinising the pictures I believe it has a number of issues which were not been taken into account.

My guess is that it will probably need about £40k spending on it to make it a top notch (£125k ish) car.

Sure people can buy vehicles and enjoy them as they are, or improve them as they go and that is great - its horses for courses and this is quite possibly (if the tubes have been done) a good path into FF ownership for someone who wants to do it gently.

Trouble is John auction houses tell us nothing might as well be selling school books or something,, so who knows until someone with proper knowledge views it,,,,,,,,
