No politics? Oh dear...

Post by Oliver »

To my big surprise and regret the obviously very popular discussion about the Brexit was closed last night (Topic "Oh dear...").
The moderator in charge expressed his concern, that this discussion may become too emotional and reminded the participants to be a car club.

I don't want to be cheeky, but I simply cannot leave that uncommented:

1.) "You can discuss anything here, Jensen related or not" it says in the forum's description.
And that's all we did. It was a serious debate about an issue that affects all of us, although
it had nothing to do with our cars.

2.) Yes sure, we're a car club. But most of us left some partitions in their grey matter to care
about other things as well. We should appreciate, that our clubmembers are not only about
pistons, bolts, raditors and steerings, shouldn't we?

3.) Of course, noone wants such discussions to end up with insults and broken friendships.
But hey, we were far from that! It was a sensible exchange of facts and opinions among well-educated
adult people. There was absolutely no sign of bad manners or beginning fuss.

4.) In consideration of the above I would take it for a sign of greatness if that topic would
be reopened again. I'd be curious to read, what other members think about this topic,
who have not yet had the opportunity to contibute.

My wife grew up in the former GDR. When I told her about this this morning, she just asked:
"Censorship? I thought these days were over!" It was in that moment when I felt, that I had
to share my thoughts with you.

Hopefully, this won't turn out as a mistake...

The topic included a WW2 fascist / anti-semitic cartoon which some people understandably took exception to, Stephen removed the offending post and then felt it appropriate to lock it.

I agree with Oliver. Is is not possible to delete individual posts rather than shut down the whole thread?By the way nice article on the Interceptor in the German Oldtimer Magazine, Oliver. I like what you said about the Swiss cars!

You are right, that drawing with the ducks (I suppose you refer to that one)
was mislead and not really enriching the debate.

But instead of closing it for everyone, a friendly but determined hint by the moderator
to the one who posted the drawing would have been the better way.

I still feel pity about this decision and don't consider it as right.

Agree that it is rather bizarre to lock a thread when any "offending" posts can simply be removed.

We should put this to a vote.

Hey Felix,
maybe there are still more members to visit this thread and agree to our opinion.
In that way the original topic
could have a chance to reincarnate... :D

    P.S.
That article was just a short buyers-guide. 8)
The same magazine featured an 8-pages coverstory about my MK3 and my friends MK1
in Sept. 2014. I"ll upload some of those pics in the members cars area these days.

If we're allowed to still comment on the EU, please Google "Europe on 387 million euros a day" to read a fascinating book by Olly Figg which is entertainingly written and totally destroys the case for being in the EU.

His post was not intended to be offensive.

We also had far more complaints about various posts mode by you leading up to the ban.

Can we please continue the discussion under "Oh dear"?

    From the forum rules:

Sometimes we may have to intervene if threads or posts start to become unruly or offensive. Basically. if the admin team do not like a thread or post, if the admin team finds a thread or post offensive (whether to the admin team or other forum member(s), or for any reason that the admin team thinks appropriate:

The thread will be locked with a reason given for this locking and then one day later it will be deleted.

This is Stephen's comment regarding why the topic was locked

Well gents (and any ladies reading), it's been interesting reading your contributions but to save the moderators being over-run with complaints and upset members I think it best if we get back to being a car club at this point. Thank you and good night. Post locked.

Stephen emailed the other moderators including myself who are happy to back Stephen's decision. Don't forget that the moderators do this along side day jobs and we can't keep an eye on things 100% of the time which is one of the reasons we tend to err on the side of caution.

If I want to discuss 'politics' I go to a 'political' forum, if I want to discuss / read about Jensens / cars etc I come here.

    Works for me...
