This is my beloved old car, that I had to let the taxman take earlier this year. It looks like it has been left outside!

A friend of mine is proposing to bid and, if he succeeds, to run the car for a year or so and sell it back to me next year when some of my clients have paid their bills, I can't stop anyone else bidding, but if you want to do a favour for a fellow member of the JOC, well, you know what I'm saying.

Well, the old girl went for £8,500 plus 15% premium, so £9,725 in total. My kind friend couldn't go that high. The buyer may have been a trader, but I'm not sure.

That was my first time at a car auction. Although there was plainly much money in evidence, there were quite a few, er, "types" there, and my friend and I agreed that we felt like we needed a bit of a shower after leaving the place, if you know what I mean. The auction was interrupted early by a somewhat eccentric looking bloke claiming that he had been cheated in relation to his classic Jag last year. The auctioneer handled the situation rather poorly and defensively, I thought. The bloke was bundled out by a large dude.

BTW, it's basically a sound car but has been left in the rain a bit! Needs exhaust manifold replacing on offside, the carb is tired, and the interior could do with a freshen up, with new floor carpets and maybe some treatment for the leather if not a re trim.. A few bubbles at one arch and tailgate, chassis and sills were when last checked. Uprated fans, starter, alternator, and Jag XJS front brakes. Great history file dating back to first owner.

Coys are not doing very well at the moments you should read what's going on about the fake Iso Prototype they verified and tried to sell at the Tecno Classica, all very embarrassing.

They were told by a fair few people that its a fake but they still went ahead.

The atmosphere all seemed a bit spivvy, I must say, and redolent of those posh classic car magazines that I occasionally buy when bored on a train journey and then want to throw out of the window because of the shallow snobbism and worship of stupidly big watches. Lots of well upholstered blokes with women who looked too young for them wearing sunglasses pushed up on their hair. The watches, of course, were big enough to be seen from space.

PS: The rich are not my mates just now. I am owed a very large sum of money by a client who is a multi millionaire, and who uses me as a free bank, as such people always do. I won a big case for him several months ago, a win that will make him even richer, and if he had paid my bill I could have bought back the car.

Here is YVF 985H in happier days. This was taken in Burgundy during a 3000 mile European road trip in 2010.

At the Coys December 2003 auction in London, S44 was sold for £32,000 or about £39,000 with commission. I had an email afterwards from a guy in the audience who watched it sell and one of the motoring magazines later reported the sale. In January 2004, Coys was placed in voluntary liquidation after being declared insolvent. Oddly enough, S44 was not shown on the Coys website as having sold at the auction, despite witnesses who saw it sell. In any case, the question then arose of whether it had or had not been sold and whether its owner had or had not been paid for it. Doug Jamieson, who is quoted in the latest article about the "fake" Grifo, said in 2004 (as he says now about the Grifo) that things would all be sorted out. Maybe so, maybe not. It transpired in 2004 that S44 had not been sold at all. It went back to its owner who still has it, as far as I know. Auctions are tricky business. When Arthur Daley said to Sgt Chisholm that something must be true because it was in all the papers, Chisholm replied: Arthur, the only thing I'll believe in a newspaper is the date. So it is with auctions. Buyer beware.

It certainly felt rather like that to me. Lots of Arfur Daley only with slightly more expensive tailoring. Too many of the cars parked outside had knobbish vanity plates on them. There has been a noticeable amount of litigation involving high end classic cars over the last few years, and there is now even a law firm that specialises in classic car related legal business.

My friend commented that many of the cars on sale looked perfect, but I observed that there is much that can be done with silicone spray and tyre black and so forth.
