Block stampings

Post by Per »

Jents the block of my 69 FF has a number of stampings. I think I understand most but not 100% certain so your input is appreciated.

In particular the "1" next to cylinders 1 and 3 are puzzling as I can find no reference anywhere.

Hi Per,

I see noone has been able to reply to your questions yet... and i'm afraid I don't have more info either.
I'm sure you've already confirmed the block size and type (F 383)

On my 1967 MK1 I then see the block nr, as confirmed in richards register.

The '1's underneath the bores I don't recognise at all. Don't think my block has them to be honest.
Found a Vignale built LHD MK1 in South Africa, Sincar #15, chassis 117/2592.
On a long and winding road to restore it back to original condition.

Maybe something stamped much later when the engine was rebuilt, to signify overboring of the cylinders? Best I can come up with…

The cylinder pictured on the left also has a 5 after the 1. :)

Picture 3 the 8's look like numbers stamped into the head gasket that didn't transfer through the silver residue of gasket coating or some assembly spray. I guess it was a composite gasket. Would have been a metal shim gasket originally I imagine.

Per,

My 383 also looks to have something similar to the '1' stamping(s).
As many pictures that I took during the engine rebuild, there wasnt a clearer one unfortunately but Ive circled where the #1 stampings are the same as yours.
No idea why they are there though.

Interesting but even this from the Big Block Mopar engine rebuild book by Don Taylor doesn't shed any light on it.

It will rrmain a mystery for rhe time bring then. Rebuild is progressing if slowly. Crank and pistons fitted as is camshaft and sprockets/chain. I made a makeshift tool as per book to get the front crank oil seal out. New one pressed in. Fitting heads is next.
