Water pump

Post by Michelin »

Hi,
Due to overheating problems i have checked the original water pump of my jensen and i saw that is very différent from the new ones available at Martin Robey. The diametor of the lmpeller is bigger in the original shape. I think that was the case for non ac version (as mine is).
Do you know where we can find such a water pump ?
Thank you for your help
Laurent

I've had good luck with these flowcooler pumps https://www.summitracing.com/parts/bra- ... e/chrysler" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

What do you mean by overheating? Is it just running hot which is almost normal or is it really overheating and boiling the water out? There is nothing wrong with that water pump by the way. :)

I would go for the Flowkooler pump - have very good experience with them in all my V8 Jensen.
But..... overheating is often caused by anything but the water pump.........
I own some of the odd Jensen 8)

I may be wrong but I don't think that's an original Chrysler 383 water pump. According to my copy of the Dodge workshop manual a 383" engine, with a 4 barrel carb, standard water pump (not air-conditioning) had 8 blades and an impeller diameter of 4.38" (111.25mm). This is the same for standard and police specification. I believe original Chrysler pump had straight vanes.
I cross checked this with a Chrysler Imperial workshop manual and that has the same specifications.

Somewhere in one of the magazines is an article from Paul Strange telling of the overheating troubles on his FF which was finally cured after trying everything else by fitting a different water pump, I don't recall which pump he fitted but the article will be somewhere after mid 2013 which was when Paul took over as editor.

It’s more the second solution. It is really overheating but i stopped before boiling the water. I agree that this water pump should be ok and i asked to the mechanic to remount it to see if it will solve the overheating problem. But I would like to know if we can find some for the future.
Thanks

Thank you for your answer. Yes we are checking all the different things that can cause the overheating but the difference between the water pump are quite big so I want to check if it could be one reason.

Ok thank you for that information and for the link showing the different water pump. We are investigating how can occur the overheating problem and if this water pump is better, I will keep it.

Is this a car that you have had for a long time and it was always fine cooling wise and now it is overheating or is it a new build and overheating? :)

It is a complete restored car and engine. We use a new Aluminium radiator with modern fans (from Martin Robey) and new hoses.

On my vignale interceptor I'm using the original fans (shrouded original fans), radiator and no expansion tank. I found when I got the car it overheated. It had a 7lb cap and also a front pusher fan (which was quite noisy) and the original fans had been taken off. So I put the original fans back on and removed the pusher fan, changed to 15lb cap and advanced the timing and it didn't overheat anymore. Except the higher lb cap ended up causing the original core to split. So I had that re-cored and its been good for the last 3 years. I also added the flowkooler pump.
Looks like you have an expansion tank. My vignale car doesn't have one. Make sure you have the plain cap on the radiator.

Something unrelated, but caught my eye in the picture - seems you have the PCV valve on the left? Is this correct and should it not be the other way round? Either that or I have my valve covers on the incorrect sides?

Just reading up now on the PCV valve position in Richard Calver's book (before I rushed down and switched them over!). Seems the vent / filler cap can be either side and is positioned based on RHD and LHD, as supposed to be kerbside for ease of filling. Will leave as is in that case as no is harm is done with with way they go anyhow. Sorry for the thread deviation and slight hijack....
