383 engine sump gaskets

Post by Eddie »

I am replacing my sump gaskets.

I have got new felpro cork ones. I thought I read somewhere to soak the new gaskets for 24hrs in oil before fitting them.

Is this correct? Or have I dreamt it?

You were dreaming! Never heard of anything like that. Just get something sticky to hold the gaskets in place on the pan. :)

The lightest smear of Blue Hylomar, just enough to hold it in place, and make sure you don't overtighten the sump bolts. Squeezing the gasket doesn't stop leaks, only encourages them and chances distorting the sump pan.

Chris, I learned the hard way.

When I had my engine out and upside down on its stand I was to overkill on the tightening. So i have gone for a new sump pan, and am paying the price as I’m doing it in the garage on axle stands.

Amazingly I read up about tightening and still managed to cock it up.

Good good tip about the Hylomar. It’s a sticky old substance so will help with being upside down.

Make sure you take the pan and from the top side flatten the bulges in the bolt holes. Place the flat of a small hammer right on top of each hole and tap with another hammer to flatten it out. The pans are always stretched out from previous tightening. :)

Luckily I am using a new pan, but on inspection of the old one I can see what you mean. The area where it leaked was really deformed from my ham fisted over tightening. When it leaked in the first place I tried to solve it by tightening.

I’m learning, but slowly; and making work for myself :D :D :D

It would be interesting to see which sump pan you use Eddie as some don't clear the cross member, so fingers crossed Ed and keep us posted My Ole Fruit :P

The new pan is on, and is identical to the old one.

A more successful project, bizarrely I did better second time round laying under the car.

The only difficulty is the x2 fixings under the front cross member. But cut down a socket to make it really shallow, put 8mm square steel in the end of the socket and was able to use an 8mm spanner easily until the bolt head had passed the flange of the pan. Letting me put use a standard spanner.

I have seen on here comments about undoing the engine mounts and jacking the engine to gain access. But my socket made easy work anyway.

Another small victory in my Interceptor ownership :D :D :D

An eBay item straight from the US.

I went for chrome. God knows why, you can’t see it.
