Does anyone know which gearbox was used in the Viper Interceptor build?

The V10 is mated to a 42RLE 4-speed automatic gearbox,

It doesn't seem to be a 42RLE, I have been comparing it with Google pictures of the 42RLE ?

Here are some other pictures …… maybe somebody else can 100% ID the gearbox type …. which incidentally seems to fit remarkably well when you consider the power it is handling.

Here is a GM Gearbox:

It turns out to be a TorqueFlite 48RE - Thus is an electronically governed, ECU controlled, four-speed heavy-duty overdrive automatic transmission that was fitted to some Dodge Ram's.

It was made in two wheel drive and four wheel drive versions. The Viper transmission shown has the two wheel drive tail shaft extension.





Now that we know the actual gearbox type we can find the dimensions for comparison with other types.

Dimension it is exactly the same as a A518 just a much more rugged item,,

It fit well in the end, but the bulkhead was cut out in order to get the engine & gearbox sitting back far enough.

If you're going to do such a modification then be prepared to take the engine and gearbox out countless times to get it to fit just right.

I think part of fitting problem may have been the Viper Engine length, which required the gearbox to be moved towards the rear of the car…. If it was fitted behind a 383/440 I don't think it would be such an issue.

If it is the same size as a 518 as Duncan has said it will fit but it is a lot tighter than a 727. The problem is the rear part is wider than the existing crossmember so the crossmember will need trimming to get it in.

The problem with these modern gearboxes is they are controlled by an ECU that gets inputs from the engine so either a programable ECU will need to be sourced or modify the existing ECU to work with a carb.

Hi Steve

You are correct about the rear part being wider, but then again just look at the Gear Vendors Overdrive unit that does fit without insurmountable problems.

And that photo of the gear vendors overdrive unit is using the long extension - there’s a shorter one as well that may be even easier to fit, and Not require too much of the tail shaft to be cut off.

Please tell... what was the purpose of the thread... are you considering an new 4 speed box?
