Tips for removing crank nut?

Post by johnw »

I have had the crank bolt off the 440 before, very recently, but now have the heads and sump off. I have been turning the engine over using the bolt and now it is stuck and won't come off with an impact gun. The crank vibration damper is still mounted. The block is still in the car with the flywheel, transmission attached. What is the safest way of locking the crank in position? Any ideas please?

Put starter back on, lock crank nut and turn starter over.

I just jammed the flywheel with a solid metal bar. no teeth lost.

I thought about that one. I did wonder if there was some sort of tool that locked onto the teeth and bolted to the starter motor housing...
Would be a pain to fix a broken tooth.

If you are using an air impact the shortest length of air hose with the larger air fitting and air hose will yield greater torque T the gun. Do not use any extensions RacerJoe

obtain an assistant ....disable the ignition coil completely .....get a 4 foot piece of wood and 6 point socket 1/2 or 3/4 inch drive ....snap it on a long breaker bar ... touching the floor with the bars handle on YOUR right side ,put the socket on the bolt, hold the assembly on the bolt with the wood , get your face out of the way , while an assistant momentarily engages the starter .....you are welcome
