can I get more oomph from my car

Post by kenny38 »

I am currently running a 770 Holley on an Edelbrock. Fitted in the boot as advised by some one on the forum is a "Hi Out Put" Electric fuel pump which goes to 6 on the meter.
The engine is not original but took the place of a well knackered one 26 years ago. Model is SP. This "new" engine has been beautiful in it's running, never over heats and starts first time every time no matter the temp and time standing. Like some zones on a woman I cannot find the kick down and never have. The original gear box runs sweet and I had rebuilt by hexperts some years ago. In short everything seems great......but there is something missing I think in perceived performance. In short I would like a little more grunt. I have asked the local boy racer engine man but he still wants to fit Webers and "tear the arse out of her". Any ideas? Kenny38

OK, So you do some mods that cost real money & you get to 110 kph a couple of seconds quicker.
What do you do with those 2 seconds that you saved?
You just get home and put the kettle on that little bit earlier.
Stately, dignified progress is very impressive.
Makes onlookers think you are a grown-up.
If your gearbox rebuilders had done a proper job they would have fixed the kickdown.
That could be one reason why the car doesn't feel so perky.

I think you answered your own question when you said you cannot find the kick down. That is why there is lack of performance. Try downshifting the car manually and see if it feels better.

Thank you guys. I have come to the conclusion after reading Shaun's post and heeding Adrian's opinion that the gits who rebuilt the tranny didn't do the job properly by the looks of it.Kenny38

Hello Kenny
They may not have set up the kickdown linkage correctly or it may not be on there at all
Would be worth checking before you do anything else as may be your problem

Just to add to that, I've been told that the 3 section kick down lever arrangement shown in the picture is only valid on earlier cars up to Mk2's. When the Mk3 came in there was a different rod arrangement and the lower bellcrank mounting boss by the guys left hand was cut off by Jensen in the factory because it got in the way of the different rod arrangement.

Kenny,

Get a Lokar kit. Works great, very neat installation too.

I highly recommend the Lokar kit as well. Solves all of the binding and lost motion of either style kick down rod set-up...
