In shoehorning the 318 small block into the 1956 541 I have a challenge in routing the exhaust. Going down the side via block huggers is a possibility, except that it precludes using the original steering setup. The Oil filter (even using a remote setup) gets in the way at the rear of the block. Going up like in the US racer (see picture) is not a very good idea for a normal road car IMHO. So how badly does it influence the running/performance if I run it as shown ib the sketch?

Hi Per,
Would routing similar to that shown in the attached photo suit your application?

Regards,
Basil

Hi Basil
That routing would cause same issues with steering unless going down in front of the front crossmember. That in turn gives issues with ground clearance.

How about going out through the inner wings like the MGB V8 did?

Similar to this maybe http://www.vord.net/cars/mgb_mods/exhau ... larch.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Looks like I can move the steering box a bit forward, see my thread under 541. Then there will be room to run the downpipe between chassis rail, oil filter remote adapter and steering box. I will have to wrap it but no big deal.

As i posted in 541 steering thread I will use the redundant RHD Mk1 Interceptor rack that I still have. That means the normal straight down exhaust will do fine. Problem solved :-)
