Replace leaking core plug

Post by Edgar »

Hi all, it seems I have a leaking core plug on my Mk3 Int with 440 engine. It's the one on the right side and nearest to the bulkhead.

Any tips/recommendations on how to replace it? Just had a quick look and it looks like there is not much space so looking for the best solution without taking the engine out.

Help appreciated! :D

I blew a core plug on my CV8 just above the cross member. It would of been an engine out job except for this ... http://www.dormanproducts.com/c-353-exp ... opper.aspx.

It has been there for a few years now with no issue, and I keep a couple in the boot for emergencies.

Thanks.

Nobody has experience on replacing it in situ?

If you undo the engine mount on that side and then put a piece of wood under the sump and jack it up the engine should tilt over and give you a lot more room. Also removing the exhaust manifold might help. You will be surprised at how much extra room you get, I suggest somebody keeps an eye on the engine as you jack it up but usually everything is OK.

As Steve says, much more room with the manifold and downpipe removed. I made this wooden support some years back to lift the engine on the sump bolts without adding to the already damaged sump pan. The oil pick up pipe in the sump was flat against the bottom of the pan and bent too.
