a mystery engine help please!

Post by Scott Mann »

Hi guys, I have recently aquired as part of a deal 2 v8s, one is chevy small block, the other the owner said is jensen interceptor,

Small block is complete and problem free,

The other has been stripped for rebuild,

My question is, how do I tell what it is and what it's from? I'm not clued up on v8s at all I'm a paint sprayer! Are there any markings or numbers anywhere to tell me what it is?

All the engine is good and with a normal rebuild will make a great motor! The rocker covers are chromed steel so I'm currently clueless! Also once I have identified what it is ill be putting it up for sale as it is of no use to me short of something nice to look at!

Not sure how to upload pics and don't have any of it as yet but any pointers would be greatly appreciated!

I have looked on ebay and there is oy 1 for sale at 2k which looks similar but again I don't know and it looks seriously over priced? Have I a peach or a lemon is what I'd love to eventually find out!

Many thanks,
Scott.

Tell us the number on the block near the distributor hole, if Jensen you can find out it's origins, and whether 383 or 440.

Thank you I will be back over the storage I've got it in on Friday so will have a look. Are these worth much in good rebuildable state? I'm a mini man really so it's new water for me! Wish I had the car it came out of! It's complete with new valves, inlet, carb etc

Thanks again.

Suggest you start by putting the small block into the Mini.........

It's a thought that has been crossing my mind!

Anyway, so I have found these numbers, on the machined flat next to distributor hole are D383
5 20

And on the machined flat on the other bank is
1424
15D

Do these mean anything?

Thanks again guys!

Also if anyone is interested this will be up for sale, open to offers, there may be some nuts and bolts missing but it is otherwise complete, i am assuming it will need rings and shells etc as per any rebuild. It is in Torquay, Devon feel free to get in touch if interested

Thanks.

Cool shame the car has been scrapped! Going to get pictures of it and get it up for sale, will give you guys first refusal before putting it on eBay! No one have any idea of vague value?

Similar kit: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Mopar-383-engin ... VC&vxp=mtr
Not sure if Jensen provenance really improves value or not since the original car is scrapped...

Hi Scott, these engines are bullet proof, I have two spare engines that I have had for 15 years and never needed. I cooked mine once when first commissioned to the point of heat seize and core plugs popping, it cooled down, replaced core plugs and water pump (that caused it to cook) and it fired straight up no rattles no problem.
As an owner, the best thing about these engines is they are bullet proof  , as a seller, the worst thing about these engines is they are bullet proof :x !
For this reason unfortunately they are not worth a fortune, and there are plenty about.
Hope this helps.
Simon.
