Did you ever decide on a fan? We may or may not need one after today's test drive where the fan didn't come on at all, the temperature remained good when driving but spat and bubbled when we stopped.

Your mechanism sucks and the fans suck also if one is blowing. If the blades are reversed it is the mechanic

The fan works when wired up separately so something else is the problem, my mechanic or hub and as I usually refer to him is now sucking air through his teeth as to how to look for the cause. The wiring loom is brand new so would you assume the temp sensor is at fault?

Could be a stuck closed or partially closed thermostat, I have just had one do that and it is only 3 months old. If the hot water is stuck in the engine it cannot get to the fan switch.

OK, but the rad was pretty hot and the fan didn't work using the manual override. The fuse in the relay box is OK. Would I be right in thinking that the manual override still relies upon a relay that works?

Yes the over ride should have worked.

Personally I would start again, new wires, relays and if you suspect the radiator switch.

After all that it was the glass fuse that had blown. On visual inspection it looked OK...we'd better go to Specsavers!
I love a happy ending! :D
