distributor

Post by Jagnut »

Ever since I have owned my interceptor it has had a misfire when booted hard, iIt would pop and bang and backfire but driving normally all was fine. I tried everything to stop the misfire but to no avail. I took it for an MOT and went through with no advisories. As it came off the brake rollers it kept stalling and was very hot. I duly went and paid for the MOT and went to the car which would not start. Flat battery.
It was jump started and I started to drive home. The temp gauge went down and all appeared well until the idiot in front stamped on his brakes at an amber light. The jensen conked out would not restart flat battery.
I walked back to the MOT garage who went out to my stranded jensen. Upon their return they informed me that the points were burnt and the gap was shut. This was caused by the base plate in the distributor wobbling about. They got the car going again and i drove home carefully.
After my long waffle I am after some advice. I haven't had time to look inside the dizzy yet so as yet am not sure what i will find. Has anyone had this problem? and is it just a matter of tightening the base plate or replacing the whole unit? If replacing the dizzy any advice will be appreciated

I would look before diagnosing.
I've seen adjustment screws come loose, plates that were loose, shaft play and worn rubbing blocks etc close up point gap.

There isn't really THAT much to a points distributor as far as needed repairs would be, but a small gap will destroy performance quickly.
Do you set your points by gap or dwell?

Also pay close attention to the state of the insulation on the wire that goes to (or comes from) the condenser. If it is bad it can lead to a very annoying intermittent loss of ignition as the base plate moves under vacuum advance.

Thank for the replies. I have now the weather is good today looked into the distributor and stripped it in situ. The fault lies with the two base base securing screws missing from the outside of the distributor, I have now secured it and started to put things back together and went i got to the points i dropped the bloody screw down inside. I took it apart again and the screw has disappeared right inside.
So what turned out to be good has now resulted to a pain in the arse. I am tempted to leave the screw and obtain a new one .

Why not fit an electronic ignition distributor?

I know kits are avialable including the ignition box and required wiring for a reasonable sum of cash and easy to fit.

No more points to worry about.

If you are going to spend the money, I might suggest the MSD replacement. I did it to mine after repeated timing and distributor problems. It starts and runs like a new car...the EFI helps, too...but the MSD, distributor, ignition, and coil make all the diffrence in the world.

I got rid of the distributor entirely and installed a Ford EDIS 8 system.

I'm considering it, but it's much cheaper from the US than in the UK...
