Well then, had an appointment with a needle yesterday at the Kassam Stadium in Oxford. Sadly not on the centre circle but in the corporate hostility areas which, suprise suprise, are not being used.
I decided to take the beast for a run as it was a nice day and it needed to stretch its legs.
Fired up ok in the garage, all my paperwork with me. Backed out, All gauges looked ok but volt meter a bit down at around 13.5v..
Anyway ran superbly down the A34 doing the "national speed limit" and got to the site.

NOW, I must say the organisation of those working at this vaccination site was MAGNIFICENT. Cannot fault it. Pleasant, polite, talkative.

Just as I am bringing the Beast into a parking bay noticed voltmeter is in the red. Oh dear, I know what's coming next.

Anyway, off for the jab. No problems. Sticker and a wallet sized card.

Back to the car. DEAD. OK, I have my load bank thingy but sadly, due to forgetting to top it up over the last year it is dead.

Phone breakdown. Very nice guy from Eggertons turns up. Puts jump leads on and fires first time. Result.... but not.

Measures voltage across battery and it is up and down like a roller coaster (I think I remember them).

However, enough whoomph to get me home but new alternator needed. Only just over two years old I think.

Will sort it this week. May be a CCS?

Keep the faith

Sorry to hear about your issues on the way for a jab.

I have had problems with the alternator regulator/black box, and with bad earths. The original Chrysler alternators (I guess yours is a modern rebuild or replica though?) have always done done their job for me. A more powerful alternator should really have upgraded wiring, which starts a vicious upgrade spiral. The new solid state black boxes often short inside, vibration killing a plastic insulator inside the unit in my case which wasn't fitted properly in my last one. They are £10 each, and I carry a spare, and often have to fit one or two until I find one that lasts for 10 years+ but still it eventually dies. I have paid more for them from trusted sources, but apart from being able to return them for another no real benefit. I suspect it is the same dodgy shop in Mexico, or now China making them. The original Mopar one was coils and contact breaker points with an adjustment screw. An interesting museum piece, and I am thinking of rebuilding one and switching to it for a short time to test it, then keeping the known working oldie as a bomb proof alternative, as they are a lot more tolerant of bad earths and dodgy old wiring, dodgy DIY mechanics, etc.

I pulled the regulator unit out of a Bosch alternator as a temporary fix for the poor quality replacement regulator boxes I wasted money on, worked beautifully. Quite likely an Opel Manta or Vauxhall Cavalier alternator I stripped as I had a few back then!

Land Cruiser about as far from a road as possible. I can only think the trees have grown up around it, after it was abandoned.

At Tesco in Cardigan yesterday.
Seriously thought about one of these as a daily a few years back.
