Maybe we should draw up a list of cars where it's "OK" to replace the engine because it is not an important part if the experience. My nomination is the Citroen DS, with its prewar boat anchor of an engine.

... and perhaps a minimum number of surviving cars.

Cos putting an electric motor into something so rare that is likely to be used infrequently seems bizarre to me. And a crying shame.

An electric motor in say a Morris Minor however... well, people have been changing the engines in those for years and there's still plenty of original spec ones out there - is yesterday's V8 transplant tomorrows electric motor?

Automotive vandalism, I hope the owner realises that he has devalued the car.
It still amazes me as to the approach of companies like Vintage Voltage still just bang on about the main advantage of electrifying classics is the increase in speed.
Most classic enthusiasts buy their cars because of what they are, they know the speed they achieve so if they wanted to go faster they would buy a modern car.
Classics are bought for many reasons, sound, smell, appearance, feel, but rarely speed.
I noticed that Car SOS have also joined the bandwagon with the electrification of an MGB, again extolling its improved acceleration and speed as well as its claimed 100 mile range on a charge. No use to me as I often have to travel over 100 miles to reach an event and I have yet to see charging points on site to get home.
I am not against electric cars and understand that electric or hydrogen powered cars must come, but please leave this to new vehicles and leave the classics alone, especially the rare ones.

I just don't understand some owners. But then there's n'owt so queer as folk. For many years I've thought a listing status for cars could be introduced as there is for buildings.

Hi all

I watched this show originally and was surprised at how much cutting and refabrication they did around the back seat to install the batteries
The work involved in putting this car back to original would be considerable

This where there were only 99 cars produced plus a 100th from the remaining parts, if my memory is correct
Plus the prototype which i saw for the first time at the NEC - and a very pretty car

Vintage Voltage have also worked on a BAT CSL conversion as well as 911's

I tend to agree, good speech Mr Gibson.

In general terms, quantifiably, today's cars are better than yesterday's.

But no-one drives say a Ford Anglia because its better than a Ford Focus.

However, people have, for example been putting Ford Zetec engines in their Ford Anglias to make them more usable. It's not something I'd ever want to do as I want my classic to be a classic - not a silhouette of one - but is putting an electric motor in place merely an extension of the same logic?

I've always fancied an Opel GT with a better engine, the original is not sporty, but the car looks good. I think one of these with a powerful Tesla unit would be a good bet.

People do all sorts of things to their classic cars that I don't like but in the free world at least they are entitled to do what they want. One only needs to look around any car show to see the range of passions that people have. Maybe the diversity is what makes the classic car scene vibrant.

In the future when electric cars are the only modern cars allowed, and maybe petrol supplies for classics are scarce preventing longer journeys, maybe electric conversions of classics will have become commonplace, or even encouraged/mandated by governments. Would a CV8 or an Interceptor have the same appeal to me in electric form? Maybe not, but to the next generation, who knows?

I've just thought of another possible candidate. The Delorean. Who has ever bought one of these for the thrill of the Douvrin engine? No-one!

How many miles will the owner do until the batteries need replacing: 10'000, 20'000, 50'000...?

And with how many miles will the conversion start to make any ecological sense? 20'000, 50'000, 100'000, 200'000...?

If the car were to be used as an everyday driver for, say, the next 30 years I could see the G-K being a lot more ecological than any modern electric car. But what do I know... :D
