Adverts & Articles - Not Interceptors

Post by Series3Jensen »

Hi all

As you will be aware, i have been assemble a quantity of historical adverts and articles
In assembling these i have come across and retained a number of articles on Early Cars, 541's, CV8's, Healeys, GT's, S4 cars & one off cars - Esporado, Nova etc

I propose to list the Chassis Nos or Registration Nos of these cars shortly, and if any current owners would like these to retain with their car, please advise and i will scan and send or post out the originals

Again, i propose to retain a colour copy, hopefully which will be incorporate into an JOC archive that can be accessed by all JOC Members or Guests

Further posting to follow shortly

Kind regards

Hi Jim

For C-V8s actually getting copies of these documents to owners won't be easy as either I don't know who the current owner is (often cars are only known to survive because they come up for sale, but who they sell to isn't known - not all owners join the JOC) or the registration isn't a known one, or the owner is not a forum member so they will never see your post - in fact after looking at the list of C-V8s I would say none of the car owners I can link a registration to are ever going to see your post, apart from me as my car is DPR 300C!

But I would be interested in the C-V8 ones, apart from DPR 300C, as I have the magazine. A scan is fine if that is OK. My email is cv8@joc.org.uk

John

Thank you for your response
I am surprised that few CV8 owners are Members, as previously - but unfortunately not now, new Members and their Membership No and the model of car that they owned, were listed in the JOC Magazine
I have endeavoured to link as many cars as possible to the Member No

Very happy to scan and e-mail you copies of the CV8 articles
Was this just for your car or CV8's generally?

Kind regards

The owner of 76 GKK ("Zac" Zacaroli, a JOC member) still owns the C-V8 MK3 and still posses a copy of the Classic & Sports Car magazine from 2012.
He also has a set of the outtakes from the photo shoot.

Hi Jim

All of them except my car (like Zac Zacaroli and his car I have the magazine and a CD of photos from the shoot).

I won't list them all but to give you an idea of how difficult it is to unite this sort of documentation with an owner here are the first 7 chassis numbers from your list with comments

JM/EXP/108 Since I wrote my first reply i have found out that the owner of this car has joined the club, though he is head of the classic car dealing firm that is selling the car. He has posted 3 times on the forum, 2 posts were about selling this car and the other about selling an SP.

MBF 616D. The last recorded owner of this car joined the club 32 years ago, I met his grandson at a show in 2014 who told me his grandfather was then too old to drive and so the car was now his, though it had been off the road for a long time. The grandson never joined the club and I have lost track of it.

DPD 334D. Not a registration the club has any record of.

HDG 313D. This car is now in Germany, the owner is a club member and does have access to the forum but he has never looked at it.

FPE 14B. Not a registration the club has any record of, unless you mean FPE 214B in which case this car sold to the USA, perhaps in 1992 and I have no record of it since then.

JFO 224. This car is in the USA and sold in November 2020 to an unknown new owner.

JM/EXP/106. This car was bought by a Hungarian car restoration company in 2010 and since then it has disappeared, as has the company, except for an inactive website.

John / Martin

Thank you both for your responses
I was anticipating that most owners of the CV8's and the 541's would be members

John

I will scan all of the articles that i have on the CV8's and e-mail these to you early next week
If you would like any of the originals, i would be happy to post these to you

Kind regards

I put a deposit on the CV8 registered MBF 616D in 1989. It was in Panorama Bay garage with a claimed 25,000 miles from new, advertised for about £11,000. We went for a spin round the peninsula with the rev counter way over, the engine sounding very throaty. I then realised it was stuck in second gear. Anyway in my innocence I put a deposit on it and then made a few enquiries (wrong way round). I spoke to one of the previous owners and he said he had some engine work done at 85,000 . . . Odd I thought. Panorama were perfectly decent and refunded my deposit.

Early the following year it turned up at Derek James’ dealership at a whopping £24,950 with ‘25,000 miles believed correct’ and I saw it again when looking at another car. It was pictured many times as it took a while to sell.

I’m not surprised that relatively few of the surviving CV8s and 541s are in the club, but that’s another subject.

Jim, I am happy with scans, but if you would rather not keep the originals then the best thing to do is send them to John Lane.

David, the subject of why owners are not members of the club is an interesting one and one I have been thinking about recently as I have just made myself a contact list for C-V8 owners and found the proportion of non members is quite high (they are people I have corresponded with or people I could possibly contact through someone else, my definition of contact is quite broad and really means I know where the car is). But, to take Mk1s as an example, 23 out of 46 contacts are not members, but 15 of the 23 don't live in the UK (and I have been told 3 of them don't want to belong to any club), 2 are in the process of selling their car, 1 contact is a museum, 1 is a car restoration company and 1 is the son of a member who died and I know he wants to sell the car, though I haven't seen it advertised for sale yet. Clearly the main reason a C-V8 owner doesn't join the JOC is because he (they are all he for Mk1s) doesn't live in the UK and, presumably, doesn't think the JOC can do anything for them and/or a club in their own country offers more.

Jim, well done with the collecting and sharing of your records. Nothing on our C-V8 though unfortunately. Like John we are sometimes in contact with owners who prefer not to be in a club, which is fine as long as they don't expect to us to provide overly extensive services to them. Clubs can help with buying, selling, restoring, repairing our cars. They connect owners, but are also a network of owners, suppliers, garages, journalists, historians. They are a go to place for people outside of the Jensen community (people interested in their first Jensen, journalists, organisors of events, garages fixing customers cars, etc). They are an archive, for the general history but also for the individual cars. They organize events. They organize and pay for stands. They have forums (like this one), websites, and for members, magazines. They are involved in the support of historical cars in general. Etc, etc. And as an owner of a C-V8 and a 541dl I have to say that John, Jane and David are doing a superb job on the registrar side of things- for the JOC and for the marque in general.

Felix

Thank you for your response

There are people in the club that have done significant work
in recording information over a much longer period than me and i applaud their efforts which after time often go un-praised

In respect of the CV8's, i have made reference to the main articles that i have on these cars and that i will be scanning and sending to John Staddon next week

I will in due course review the historical adverts i have on all CV8's and it will be interesting to see if they identify your car - as the adds go back 40 years
Not sure how long that you have owned your car

Kind regards

David

Thank you for your response on the CV8's

It is interesting to note about the mileage anomaly on MBF 616D, as i have identified information on some Interceptors where speedos have been recorded as changed many years ago, but not sure that information was then passed on to subsequent owners
I may have both of these adverts on this particular car!!

Hi Jim
We've had our C-V8 (112/2454, KUL 50D) since 2012, and it was previously owned for 40 years by Hartmut Jungnickel. There is an article on the car from a newspaper from the early 70s where they are quite lenient with the facts :D, see below, and it appeard in a German TV documentary In the 80s or 90s. First owner is known, 2nd owner is a bit of a mystery if one even existed. 3rd, 4th, 5th owners are all known. I more or less have a record of every thing done to the car for the past 50 years, meticulously recorded, down to each oil change done (thank you Hartmut). And I have the factory records from John Staddon, thank you also. All very valuable documents for an owner.
