Martin R wrote: Tue Sep 14, 2021 4:01 pm Colin, virtually every hospitality business in England, possibly the UK, is suffering from a lack of workers.
It's been widely publicised in the news and, I have personal experience of the difficulties restaurants are having recruiting staff post-lockdown. Hotels are in the same boat.
Many workers moved into different roles in other industries, rather than sit at home, not sure they'd have a job or if the restaurant they worked for will even ever re-open. Many haven't.
Some foreign workers moved back to their home country during lockdown to be with families, in part as many live-in pubs, which were closed, meant they lost their accomodation when the pub shut.
Some of those workers will never come back. Some may not have the relevant paperwork to live & work in the UK now.
A lot of products and produce comes from across the UK and far beyond. There is a huge shortage of lorry drivers, again very well publicised everywhere. Many supermarkets have large gaps on their shelves where they haven't received deliveries. Maybe the ones near you aren't affected?
You appear to be unaware of this current well publicised situation.
The number of rooms for the JOC weekend was actually reduced from normal levels to help to alleviate staff pressures / shortages.
Having said all of that, I personally never had to wait long at the bar, breakfast went well (cold plates on Sat / Sunday aside) and the food was "OK" for the mass catering.
It's rarely if ever "good".
Compared to some previous JOC weekends, where I recall waiting outrageous times for beverages or service, this one was comparatively superb.
Martin, I did say in my post that staffing may have been an issue

If you believe the figures for the lorry drivers shortage your believe anything, I had an email from Chris a couple of days ago on this subject. This was from a radio 4 programme. I'm sure he will not mind me sharing.
Where did the 100,000 number come from?
Apparently, according to the Road Hauliers Association, there was a 60,000 shortage in 2015. That was before Brexit and the Pandemic so we have to ask what did they do about it in the last 5 years before we left the EU?
Then in 2020 due to the pandemic there was 25,000 less HGV tests taken. So they have simply added that number to their previous 60,000 “shortage” assuming that everyone who takes an HGV test is taking it to work as a lorry driver. So now we have an 85,000 “shortage”.
The ONS (Office of National Statistics) estimates there were 15,000 fewer EU lorry drivers working in the UK in this year than there were in 2019. That now adds up to the 100,000 figure.
And the RHA can’t really explain their original 60,000 figure properly.

The figures do not add up
I am very aware of the current situation,, but there are how many unemployed in this country?

And quite rightly the government shut down a LTD loophole, because a lot of foreign drivers was not paying tax and this was shut down before the pandemic

In the 25 years I was driving Lorries there has always been a shortage and until the conditions and pay improve there's always going to be one.
Lorry driving is the only job where you can be sent to prison for just doing your job.
Only working half a day now.

This is way off topic and I am not making any sort of political or personal point, but maybe one of those on here with personal experience can explain. There is a shortage of plumbers, so they increase their rates through the roof and people have to pay. There is a shortage of roofers, so they charge a fortune and turn down jobs that they can't be bothered to do. Bricklayers similar... So why, when there is a worldwide shortage of HGV drivers (worse in Germany I believe) do they complain about low pay? Is UNITE not doing its job?

You make a good point Mike,

Totally unscientific but speaking to a captive audience (my patients!) there is a reluctance as some jobs are seen as "hard". This might be expecting it will involve unsocial hours, nights away, need to not only learn but go on refresher courses, though low pay is always up there.

I think many jobs have been historically undervalued, health & social care and hospitality spring to mind and the crisis has enabled many to stand back and think "what do I want to do with my life?" As the economy picks up you are correct that supply and demand will work to sort this but there are brakes, you can't just start driving an HGV you have to train and pass tests (I note the government is doing a little to cut the red tape). For years many occupations have been poorly paid as there was always the option of importing cheap labour from both the EU and the rest of the world. Brexit and the Covid restrictions have vastly reduced and in some cases stopped this.

I expect there will be a lot of resistance, if the economic forces you identify result in increased wages then we will have to pay more, in some cases a lot more.

I recall the ancient Chinese curse, "May you live in interesting times". :D

Hi, Fellow members. About this exclusion from prepaid BBQ. I feel I have to tell you what happened at a JCCA national rally held at the Casino West Point a few years ago. We were all invited to the PREPAID lunch and the caterers said only enough for food for payees would be supplied.
Well, myself, my young bride and several other couples could not get any food as many attendees hadn't paid in advance but just walked in and partook. I ccomplained but staff said they were not security guards and anyone could come in and "perhaps you should have had a member on the door checking tickets"
I killed a local and ate his liver  many went hungry and had to eat in the hotel fine dining resturant. There is a message there somewhere but not one attendee who prepaid but didn't get anything except half lobster with a fine Tasmanian chardonay etc. really kicked up a stink and no precious resignations. We all make mistakes and always the day trippers cause problems.Kenny38

Good story Kenny, but I'd like to make the point that original poster Colin wasn't being precious and although a Day Tripper he was a member and entitled to be there. I'm sure no-one planned for him to feel an outsider.

C'mon Kenny, get serious. You are letting him off light here, I just don't believe it. He was a literal day tripper! A Sunday driver, yeah!
One way ticket? He drove there in his Jensen so no problems getting home hopefully :? You know, twin points ignition, spare diffs on the FF and 2 spare carbs on the SP, hopefully that puts one way ticket rep to bed once and for all and we can acquit him on that.

"a day tripper is a UK term I think... tourists who sign on a for a day trip instead of an overnight vacation... it is used here as indicating a lack of commitment"
:D :D :o I must say I liked Grants approach in his pm. Suprise Santa. Doesn't work for everyone though. Thankfully Penny Farthing's animals are all safe now. I did think we would have to send in Grant in a manual Vignale FFF 100 at one point.

PS: does anyone know why my username is not in green? If I sign up on 31st December, can I still buy a 50 year JOC badge, hide my 24 years on no membership and still get a year of mags going forward? Asking for a friend like.

Johhny Baby, you may have been deplatformed for mentioning the appalling Grant appearing in a pre paid BBQ which would scare off the sea gulls. I am sure you are the John Wilde I met at a JCCA national rally many years ago. Could you let me have the money back now as it's been some time and am sure your grandmother is finally out of hospital. Kenny38 8)

I cannot believe that anyone would use less than fuel 99 in their Jensen. 95!! or even desiel. How awful. My car pinks/pings rather badly on anything less than 98.
Stephen, it maybe because you are in Essex and the powers don't think it matters. Kenny38 :)
