MK 2 LOUVERED HOOD / BONNET HOW TO FIX ?

Post by StevenLA »

Hi Members,

I bought a 1970 MK 2 last year and the car came with a louvered hood.

Of course a regular MK2 did not come with a louvered hood I believe ?

Unfortunately, someone added a little too many louvers approximately 30 !

The car also has an electric sunroof ?

So my question is do I try to have the vents re-closed and try and make the hood/ bonnet
look more like a regular MK 3 hood ?

I have another un louvered hood I can put on the MK2 and use the vented hood for the MK3.

Anyway, just sharing this interesting dilemma !!

Any Comments or ideas are welcome have a great week.

Cheers Steven.

SPs had full-length louvres - 84 of them, according to one of Richard Calver's magnificent books.

Whereas Interceptor saloons only had 44, as an option.

The process of forming louvers involves stretching the metal.
I think closing them is an impractical proposition.
Leave them as they are.
They look great!
Bonnets don't always fit nicely when you transfer from one car to another.

I think as you have a spare bonnet/ hood and your MK11 didn't come with louvres you should change it over.

To be honest a bonnet with that amount of slots looks so wrong

If you fit the louvered bonnet to another car, it will still have the same number of louvers.
.
TOP TIP:

You need to organise a big Jensen gathering where those who want louvered bonnets but have plain bonnets swap over their bonnets with people who have louvered bonnets but want plain bonnets.

It is already in both 'General' and 'Interceptor Tech' sections but the first response was in 'General' so here we are.
Exciting, isn't it?

And I bet you are both interceptor owners or ex owners and don’t see the problem with flooding the forum with interceptor content….

In the future anyone who has a similar issue will not easily find this thread as it is in the wrong place.

Perhaps a nice message to a kind moderator such as Stephen, VFK44, asking him to fix it.

Hi, Dave T. If we followe your request to remove this post to it's "rightful" place in Tech then we should remove "For idiots only" from Cars for Sale and place in this forum.

Hi Steven, I think the car looks great in that colour, with the contrasting silver roof, the wire wheels, and the louvres! It
looks so 1970s Los Angeles! Would be great to drive round LA in that! It just needs some white walls to finish it off! That may also be the original bonnet, the chassis number of the car will usually be stamped on the bonnet, usually on the metal tabs the supporting struts attach to. Maybe have a look? I like the windscreen wipers too which are a a slightly offbeat touch too. As your other cars sound to be more standard, it is nice to have this one as a talking point!

Hi Steven,

I'm according to John (as often)...
Keep him as he is - he is unique!

If you want to get the louvres off - now problem - take a flex, cut them on every side in the acccording angle, grind a little bit away on the rear side (where they are open - also with the Flex), then use a rubber hammer (a second guy should be below the bonnet with a part of wood to hold against), then afterwards weld it, grind it, the rest will be done by putty and painting - and then you have a flat bonnet...

If you'll bring it to me it will be a 2days job, 2 people - means around € 2000+ (ex painting). So - keep it like it is - it's special. The rooftop should be tight, otherwise take it out, form a corresponding metal sheet and weld it in , will be also a 2day job (but only one person)

If you want to have him perfect you also have to change the wheels and perhaps some other parts (original wheels I just bought for a customer - € 5,000!!!)
You need the bumpers, perhaps some interior, some gauges, etc - so there is a lot to invest.

The engine and almost the electric needs a lot of work...

Keep him as he is - as a very special interceptor
I like him 👍

Good morning from Los Angeles !

THANK YOU for all your comments, I was very surprised when I checked the site this morning
to see so many responses.

I am going to leave the hood/ bonnet as it is on that car as it came with that car !

Someone customized the car and made it a one of a kind.
The original Ca License plate said JC I wonder who that could be ?

As suggested I have 5 other regular looking Interceptors in various forms.

I have a set of MK3 rims on the car right now and I also have an original set of MK2 rims re-done which
can go on the car. So many choices.

SORRY to DAVE T for committing the Cardinal sin of " Placing the content in the wrong place" It shall not happen again son !

Again, thanks for all your comments and have a great week !

Regards Cheers Steven.

I went with more subtle on my MKII. Just enough to let the heat out.
