Historic RFL

Post by RichardC »

Hello All I have searched the forum to the point of confusion. A simple guide would be much appreciated.
I want to change my tax class to Historic to get nil rate tax. The Healey was first registered on 1 August 1983. I taxed the car on line but got charged. Speaking to DVLA they are asking for V5 which i have, a V10, Mot ( if applicable ) which it is not and then confusingly a factory letter or Glasses Check Book statement confirming build date !
All input to help me understand this process would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks Richard

That registration date is a bit late. It is 40 years to get the exemption, not 30, date of manufacture or first registration.

Apply for a vehicle tax exemption
Apply at a Post Office that deals with vehicle tax.

You need to take:

the log book (V5C) in your name
your vehicle tax reminder letter (V11), if you have one
an MOT certificate that’s valid when the tax starts, or evidence if your vehicle’s exempt from an MOT (V112)
an insurance certificate or cover note (only in Northern Ireland)
If you do not have the log book, download and fill in an application for a log book (V62). Take it to the Post Office with the £25 fee.

What happens next
The Post Office sends your log book to DVLA.

DVLA will send you an updated log book.

You’ll get a refund (if you’re due one). It will take longer than usual to get your refund because of coronavirus (COVID-19). Contact DVLA if you have not got your refund within 6 weeks of getting your updated log book.

You can still use your vehicle while your application is being processed.

I might be mistaken but wasn't the last Jensen Healey made in 1976 & looking at your post i says MK1 so should the date be 1973 not 1983

My mistake. Should have read 1/8/73. Thanks for the replies. I was going to the Post Office but DVLA are saying otherwise. So the confusion continues !

Hi Richard

I did this for 115/3484 about a year ago (and before that for 1640/30071 in 2015). A Post Office can do it, although you're better off going to a larger Post Office where the staff are more likely to have gone through the process on their computer before. If you need it, Martin Robey should be able to supply a copy of the build card for your J-H showing the build date.

Best wishes,
Nigel

You can do this online on the government webpage .

https://www.gov.uk/change-vehicle-tax-c ... -is-exempt

It's only a matter of ticking a box

Hi Colin

That's the page I copied that tells you to take your documents to the post office.

Thanks everybody. Spoke to DVLA again and was told to take the V5 to a suitable post office with " Historic" for the change of class. Post Office do the rest.
Coincidentally a friend of a friend did exactly this today for a motorbike. All sorted on the spot. I will give it a go tomorrow.

The lady at my local post office who did mine a few years ago said it is not obvious on there screen where to do it, luckily she is a very experienced at her job with plenty of classic cars in the area and she found it at the bottom of the screen.

She even handed me the form for a refund of the remaining tax.
