The Fast Lady 1962

Post by AH1951 »

Nice scene with an early Interceptor at about 6 mins 30 secs.
Does this car still exist?

This car is definitely still around as it was Donald Campbell’s Interceptor reg RLT 790. A photograph exists of Donald with his car back in 1957.

I met Keith Cerinno in around 1999 and he did indeed claim that an early Interceptor in his possession had belonged to Donald Campbell.

The article on Ulric's website actually say about the exact opposite,it says there is no proof that the car ever belonged to Donald Campbell and his daughter doesn't remember it, Richard Calver says he did own it but Richard can't remember how he knows that, Ulric says a photo of the car and Donald Campbell together would be good to show that actually he did own it, which implies there isn't one, and it says not much is known about the cars survival but Keith Cerrino may have had it in the 1990s. But other people including Peter Neale have said that Keith Cerrino did own it in the 1990s and in off-forum correspondence about the photos of Barn Find Interceptors posted here in 2018 (early Interceptors but search Barn Find Interceptors and you will find the thread) I was told that Interceptor 74 may also be in the barn/workshop with the cars that appear in the photos in the thread.

I had a bit to do with Keith Cerrino in the 1980s. He owned INT74 at that time, and probably still does. He would have shown me evidence of Campbell's ownership of the car, which is why that is reflected in the 1991 databook, but I do not have documentary proof myself. As it happens, the car I own today was once owned by Donald Campbell. If I were going solely by the paperwork, I might leap to an unwarranted conclusion.

Hi

A note from my records shows that Keith Cerrino (Mem No 1487) owned a 541 Chassis No 177 Reg No UYX 254 in 1984 - referred to in JOC Mag 62 07.1984

He also owned an early Red Int Conv (1950;s ?) in 1991 Reg No MUW 784 - referred to in JOC Mag 100 10.1991

He also owned a JH GT which was 2nd in the JOC Concours in 1993 and was for sale (£6,500) in JOC Mag 112 11.1993

I have no record of him owning a later Interceptor convertible although my records are far from complete

KInd regards

A nice picture of MUW 784 here.
Wrongly described as MUM 784?
Interestingly, Interceptor #74 does not appear in the list, because they are concentrating on convertibles.
Still no closer to knowing for sure if the car in question still exists.

An interesting development today. A friend from my local car club was watching an old film today and saw a car he thought he recognized and checked the registration to confirm that it was an early Interceptor, he then told me about it. The registration was RLT 790 and I of course, knowing it all, said, you've been watching The Fast Lady. But no, the film was The Marked One released in 1963, the same year as The Fast Lady, so that is two films the car has appeared in. Also significant is the fact that my friend was able to check the registration with DVLA as I didn't think there was a record of it, but there is and though it has no tax or MOT the last V5 was issued in 2019. So perhaps RLT 790 isn't stashed in a barn with the other Cerrino cars, unless that collection is being sold off, or someone is registering them with DVLA, and it is out there to be bought and sold, though privately so we have never heard of the sale.

An early Interceptor was shown at a recent Australian national rally. It is a convertible and has been totally restored to a factory condition. Owner has told me it was some years in Singapore and eventually went to Darwin and stored in an aircraft hangar in a poor state for many years. Now absoslutely beautiful. Calver may have more.
