An ad in my local free paper!

Just wondering if the car’s known.
I don't do shoes and handbags....I just buy petrol.

I thought I had a contact but only on my spreadsheet. So I won’t be contacting the ‘owner’. But if he sees this I would love an update

That's the manual Mk1 that Gregg Alfarez done all the work on when he was involved in Cropredy, that picture was taken for the auction when it was last sold, >> https://www.classiccarauctions.co.uk/ev ... k.1-manual
The resto company has taken that pic from the net/Auction pics >>

Hi all,

It's mine and I love it! Sorry for the late reply, but only just got around to registering on this forum....

I'm new to Jensen's, but always wanted one with a manual box and finally found this car in 2018. It's been in storage/had various items attended to by specialists since then. It was indeed fully restored by Cropredy about 10yrs ago - I recently received all photos of that work. They fully rebuilt the engine and must have done an excellent job.

After a full mechanical check/workover by Rejen, I took it for it's first drive last Summer. Over a couple of days with temperatures exceeding 30 degs C we covered 450 miles, mainly off motorways, and it didn't miss a beat. Ran like an absolute dream - I honestly couldn't believe how smoothly it drove. No signs of overheating in the worst of traffic sometimes too.

Have just had a few minor paintwork items sorted, the fuel tank reconditioned by a "Renu" specialist (without leaks, fuel economy now improved to a whopping 17mpg !) and the car (apart perhaps from the banded wheels) looks stunning. I wondered whether it was worth replacing some minor bits of chrome work but, after obtaining the letters between the original owner and the factory after a year's ownership in 1969, I'm glad I didn't. He complains about slight pitting in various areas which the car still has. It's quite amusing to read this history - it seems the owner had doubts the car would last a few more weeks, let alone another 54 years:)

I drove another 320 miles in it over the last two days and, again, superb. It was originally California Sage and I'd love to return it to that colour one day.

The manual gearbox is probably smoother than the one on my TR6 and the clutch isn't really heavy enough to notice. It really is just a FANTASTIC machine.

I noticed it featured in an advert for a small car restoration company recently - just for the record they have had nothing to do with the car and should have since removed the photo.

Cheers
Carl

Hi Carl and welcome to the forumImage
I actually tried to buy this car before it went to Cropredy for it's rebuild back in around 2012/2013 I guess it was, it got found instorage and came up for sale not far from me here in Surrey Uk, it was Burgundy at the point & the heads were in the boot, it was a total restoration job, but that didn't put me off, it was the person who was selling it, he was a trader and was very rude to me when I asked to come and look at it, it was £15k at that point, so sadly I missed the sale, then I saw it not that long after at Cropredy. After that I traced it and found the owner (After Cropredy had done their work to it) I actually have a picture of the Engine, Clutch & Car (whilst at Cropredy) on my wall in the Barn  >>

The owner I traced was the Guy selling it that was putting it into the Auction that I believe is where you bought it from, I think one of the original owners was bidding against you?
Did you Buy it from the Auction in 2018 Carl?Image
Where are you and the Car now Carl?Image Portugal or Uk?..Do you want to be my new best FriendImage
I went over to the Guy's house that was putting it into the Auction and tried to strike a Deal..But we were singing from different Hymn Sheets sadlyImage
I Love your Car Carl for exactly what it is, an extremely rare Mk1 ManualImage
You're probably aware of the other one within the club too are you? >>

Grant, it was very kind of you to break in to Cropredy and "fix" the wheels by adding your trademark banding to them.

Hi Grant,

The photos of the Club's other manual Interceptor are beautiful and yes, I recognise those Cropredy pictures:)

I did buy it at the Warwickshire auction and was bidding against a previous owner apparently. One of the two owners out of five (including myself) I haven't managed to source properly yet.

That auction is still a bit of a haze to be honest - all I remember is my son tugging my arm and shouting "Dad! Dad! What are you doing? You're way above your upper limit! Mum's going to kill us!". She didn't and she loves the car as much as I do luckily.

I've just purchased a set of original chrome Rostyles which I think should set the car off nicely. The banded wheels certainly have "presence" but the car has so much original charm and character I thought they detracted from that a bit. (Who did you use to chrome your banded wheels btw? I may get mine done as spares - they actually look quite impressive!).

Does anyone know the details of the trader mentioned above that sold the car to the owner who used Cropredy for the restoration? I aim to prepare a book with as much detail of the car's history as I can find. Any tips for achieving this much appreciated - I have the factory bits from Martin Robey and as I mentioned, the letters do make quite amusing reading.

Cheers
Carl

PS - ref your gearbox rebuild, maybe you can help? After 4hrs of driving the other day, when out of gear in neutral there was a slight metallic rattle coming from the base of the gear lever. It was a "loose" kind of rattle that sounded like lightweight washers oscillating together. The following day it had gone and didn't re-appear after another few hours driving. Any thoughts?

Hi again Carl :) I didn't get any Chroming Done Carl, 1) I find far too expensive for what it is, and also No-one wants to do them anymore  There used to be a place that would split the wheels, chrome the centers and replace the rims with new then chrome the new rims , then weld them back together and a cost now of £2.5k, but they stopped doing them as they are just too much grief and headache. I didn't have any chroming done Carl, I had a good set of centers and welded them into a NEW Chrome set of wide rims.
With regards to the tracer, I can't remember myself who it was, but he was at Brooklands Race Track, but the previous owner if you have his details knows because I talked to him about that trader
The gearboxes are a very strong but simple design, cheap to rebuild with new bearings, sycro's etc, not sure what the noise was you heard though, could have been absolutely anything Carl, even a bit a loose linkage pin maybe.
2) You didn't say where the car is Carl..Uk or Portugal? If Uk, where abouts are you based Carl?..Maybe we could meet up at a breakfast meet one morning?...Kindness..Grant :P

Hi Carl, an interesting story about the faults and chassis file. Our first FF had a dodgy fitting rear side window in the factory inspection. The first owner complained about a leak from the same window when he returned the car to Jensen in its first few months. That window still leaks! Never had a problem from the other side!

Here's a picture of my standard RoStyle, with a new. Pirelli Tire on it. Proper size tires from Pirelli are available new with the period tread pattern. I dropped onto these wheels quite recently, bargains do come up. We like Manuel gearboxes too, and have a Triumph Spitfire Mark 4. Can we be best mates as well?

The more I read of the history, the more I chuckle……

“Almost weekly, new bubbles under the paint appear”
“The chrome on the wheels is lifting off in large patches”
“The bumper chromium plating is now coming off in strips a foot long and an inch wide”
“Frankly I am ashamed to drive my car at the moment”

All this when the car was only 18 months old !

The car is in the UK where I still work but I live in Portugal. Am just having the underneath cleaned up and Bilt Hamber treated so it should be ready to drive again by the Summer.

We should definitely meet somewhere then. I do miss the Real Ale.
