Princess Grey

Post by felixkk »

We've been asked by a member from Germany what the modern paint for Princess Grey is- does anybody have a paint code they have used?

Apparently a code 00A05UCJ is in circulation, but we do not know from which company. And there is an ICI code M049-2334 but that doesn't lead me anywhere

My C-V8 has been repainted in silver, but it seems that there is still some of the original Princess Grey paint visible. I'm taking the car to the paint shop next week to try to match the colour, or even scan it if possible.

Hi Felix

I do know of a restoration company in Holland that has painted a two-tone C-V8 with Princess Grey as the roof colour, that company was able to match Princess Grey and I was promised details of the paint formula, but though I sent two email reminders to them they didn't give me the formula, in fact didn't reply to my emails at all. That company was Classic Mike and the contact was Toon Helmer, toon.helmer@gmail.com. You could try contacting Toon Helmer but as I say he didn't reply to either of my last two emails.

However, about a year ago I was talking to Alan Bray of Kestrel Classic Cars about matching old paint colours and Alan told me he had used a paint company called Romart Automotive from Stourbridge and that company had matched old ICI paint codes for him in the past, the Romart website address is:

https://www.romartautomotive.co.uk/contact_us.asp

Last September I actually gave this information to someone else who was trying to match Princess Grey and he told me he would let me know if either Classic Mike or Romart Automotive were able to give him a colour code, but I didn't hear any more from him.

Classic Mike has responded (big thank you- but I haven't had the chance to decipher the formulas). The grey of the roof looks very much like the grey which is visible on my C-V8:

I know Mike and have seen that car; to be honest it needs some more extra attention!!
Besides that, I am not convinced that the grey on the roof is the same as Jensen Princess grey.

Felix, if the colour swatch at the bottom of the formula is the colour the formula makes then you have been given the formula for the body colour and not the roof colour, but it's obviously the roof colour that you need.

Interestingly the code you had already starts with 00A05 then three digits, BS 00 A 05 is a British Standard colour reference for a mid-grey, the nearest RAL colour is 000 70 00 Light Grey (near but not necessarily the same).

Yes, I gathered the last picture was the body colour. I was hoping the 2nd one was the formula for the roof. I'm not familiar with British Standard colour reference...

Do you have an original colour to compare it with?

I am curious about the Princess Grey as well. I am not that far away from paint on my CV8, and it was Princess Grey. It would be nice to get it as close as possible.

Hi Mike, do you have any original paint left on the car to compare the colour?

John- you're probably right: the British Standard Colour 00 A 05 is Goose grey / Sea Mist / Goosewing (good names!). One site I found converts it to NCS S 3000-N, which is a swatch we have at the office (next to RAL) that I can compare the paint with. Does that grey look correct to you? Peter from Germany will be sending me the swatch of the BASF paint he has for his C-V8.

Hello Felix,
Unfortunately I do not have any of the original paint left on the car.

Unfortunately I haven't had much luck finding larger areas of the original paint. I removed the door sills- nothing remaining. Also behind the carpet to the right of the drivers foot there were no traces of princess grey. Two places which to me look like Princess Grey is in the hood opening mechanism and below the grille. I'll try to remove some of the silver paint in those areas.

I took the car to the paint shop. Basically all you can do is try to match it with paint swatches. But they said the exposed areas are really to small to get a close match. And the paint formulas I received from Holland are both from the blue...

What do you think, could this be the Princess Grey colour:

Hi Felix,
I have a feeling Alistair Thomas' 541R is Princess Grey so it might be worth contacting him. I am fairly sure he has recently had some paintwork done so may have a paint code for you.
