Re: CAR AND CLASSIC
Interesting article which I’ve just caught up on.
I was surprised by the 117 bhp output of the original engine as I’d always thought the later 150bhp was the figure and I wonder what the respective torque figures were?
The Rolls Royce 4 ½ litre engine had undisclosed figures but believed to be 130bhp and 250lbs ft with a slightly longer stroke than the Austin engine at 114mm versus 111mm. (Isn’t stroke where the torque is generated?)
The 4 ½ litre Daimler engine of the time was 167 bhp and 260lbs ft torque with 108mm stroke. This modern engine was really quite powerful for the time but was never really exploited because of lack of a suitable gearbox and other users shied away from its cost. A shame really as it could have outshone the Rolls engine which dated from 1922
(Edited mm from cm)

Re: CAR AND CLASSIC
Dear Barrie,
111 or 114cm is more than a meter. A stroke like that can be expected only in the largest diesel engines for ships (if at all).
I think you missed the point.

Re: CAR AND CLASSIC
Of course it should be mm and not cm as you so wittily and pointedly point out Jens.
I was only trying to be a good European whilst forgetting that I now no longer have to.
I shall stick to Imperial rules in the future.
I’ll edit it so that future generations can’t see what a plonker I am.
I’ve been reading up on the 4 1/2 Daimler engine mentioned above and see that it was withdrawn for saloons (but not limousines) as its torque destroyed Daimler’s delightful fluid-flywheel pre-selector gearbox.

Torque to finger tight, then 500,000 ft lbs by increments.
