Correct Blue Metallic Paint for a 72 MK3

Post by Martin B »

I have a MK3 Interceptor which goes into the Paint Shop tomorrow. It was registered on the 3rd November 1972 and was originally a metallic blue. Because the car has been completed stripped there is now no evidence of the original paint colour. Is there a reference point I can research to get the right colour?

I found my original color (Tangerine) in the wing side vents, hidden by black undercoating.

You might check there.

Hi Martin ,

128/4818 was originally Royal Blue.

I’m not sure if this was metallic?

Mine’s Nevis Blue and when parked next to 3 Jensen GT’s we

discovered ALL 4 were different!

Not sure code will help.

Martin, 4818 was originally painted Royal Blue in air drying cellulose metallic. The ICI code was M031 3310. ICI codes are usually cross referencable to modern formulations.

Hi Martin,
As Pymmie said, the old paint codes aren't always of use this many decades later. You need a modern formulation and sometimes they aren't even close to the original colour as I've discovered seaching for a modern equivalent for Brienz Blue. Having said all that, here's a formula for Royal Blue in the PPG Cobra system: (Keep in mind that this is from an Australian database and may not be available in your neck of the woods.) Sorry about the crap quality - it was just a photo of the computer screen.
Hope it helps and good luck!
