Hampton Court Concours 4-6 Sept (Photos / Video)

Post by Pymmie »

Just got back from a great day at Hampton Court.
Travelled up with Dave Pearce aka Oily Rag in his lovely Mk3.

Arrived in the grounds early on Saturday morning to gather in chronological order ready for display. We were escorted to our designated space by the organisers through the grounds of the palace.

As we drove in convoy a car in front overheated so we both stopped to assist. Luckily Chris Reed has only suffered a blown fan fuse and were soon on our way. That small delay meant we were in the right place at exactly the right time.

Have a look at the video , as hundreds of Deer stampede through the Palace grounds just a few feet from Dave & Stewart Kelseys cars.

Once again a fantastic day at Concours.

A big thank you to David for organising, also once again managing to order some great weather.

To me this really is the best event of the year. Fantastic cars in an amazing setting and a great atmosphere.

A couple of snaps below. My favourite car there was the Facel Vega 2

Nice to see that someone was in charge of the brakes!

How did you know that that's what the owner was doing? Don't want one of these running away.

It was real 'chocks away' machine so obviously it needed chocks, I think that might be the owner on the right, he's stopping it falling over as well!

Hi John

Maybe they are related as my guy was telling us about driving it on the road and where they keep it.

That is a Leyat Hélica from 1921. Marcel Leyat designed and built his first aeroplane in 1909 and then theorised that cars would be simpler and lighter with no transmission, rear axle or clutch and obtain better fuel economy. It was revealed at the 1921 Paris Motor Show. It is powered by an 8hp 1.1 litre flat twin ABC Scorpion aero engine turning the propeller. It features cable operated rear wheel steering as did aeroplanes of that era. Only 2 original examples exist of the 30 that were built. This is a replica copied from one of the original examples in the Musée des Arts et Métiers in Paris, but it does have an original 1921 Scorpion engine. It is apparently quite comfortable to drive and the chap pictured with the blocks has driven it at up to 40mph. He did give a demonstration drive around the show.
