Best Battery for a Mk3

Post by Ian Roberts »

Can I poll the membership as to the best battery to put in my Jennie?

I've another battery failed on me from Halfords and cannot replace it as I've lost the receipt.

I think it was a 570Nm cranking force last time. Is that big enough or would you go higher? I have a Mitzy alternator on the car due to upgraded fans.

I use Bosch blue top batteries and they seem to last 3-4 years.
I can get the number tomorrow if you want think from memory 069 or 078.

I would second that - the 069 seems to work and last well.

I have a Yuasa HSB334 Silver 5000 95AH 830A. 5 year guarantee (don't lose the receipt). Not sure of the equivalent UK Battery size. You should be able to get one for about £120.

Ian,

Does your Mk III use the original steel battery shroud (which would limit the length of the battery) or not?

Cheers,

I have a Halfords battery guaranteed for 4 years. I made a battery box and tray out of Tufnol phelonic sheets to mitigate engine heat transference. 3 years in all OK, but I am keeping my receipt in a safe place just in case

They might have emailed the receipt to you. It might be possible for them to look you up if you gave them your details. If you are well within, maybe they will take the date code on the battery?

I would be interested to know if you have a fast wind starterotor fitted.

in 2018, on recommendation, i fitted a a Yuasa YBX1072 supplied by a local specialist battery supplier, it is performing well and fits neatly into the original box and tray. The supplier went on to say that sourcing a low volume battery from motorfactors or tyre companies could result in a poor performing battery if it has been stored on a cold concrete floor for an exteneded period of time.

I use varta batteries and have done for years and used to spec them when I worked for a local authority in central battery systems for emergency lighting.
I have an 069 in mine and it's been in around 6 years with no problems.

For a different solution I have used an Optima RC104 sealed battery (-078 size) relocated to the trunk. 800CCA and now in year 12!!

Try the old trick of putting the receipt in a sealed plastic bag and putting it on the battery shelf, then put the new battery on top. You can't lose it then!
