Musings following a BBQ and drink. Post 2.

Post by Mark1Stu »

A little painful to consider, but what car would you replace your Jensen with when the time comes for a simpler life...or to cash in?

My thoughts are:

Triumph Stag - great sound, good package and back up, and perhaps half the price (assuming you buy wisely)

Volvo C70 Ph 1 Coupe - There's the Saint connection (although less said about the Val Kilmer film the better) and the first mass produced coupe since the Volvo 1800 built by Jensen. And a good 240bhp 2.3 T5 with all the goodies can be bought for less than £3k (under 80k miles) - and less than half the price of a Volvo 850 T5R estate. So some investment potential?

What are your thoughts?

Piper. I always go and talk to the 2 guys who sit on the Piper stand at the NEC - and they have let me sit in one. But as I get older I think it will be come more difficult; getting out is harder.

The Piper is now or never. I am tempted too  I think the Piper could overtake Jensens price wise in a few years. Volvo wise a friend bought a T5 recently as a main car and really likes it. A Rochdale Olympic for a late 1950s car, Rolls Royce 20/25 for pre war picnics, less than Jensen money, last forever, so many were made. 70s/80s An Alpine A310 of some sort would be fun. A 1999/2000 Audi S4 Biturbo can be had for not much more than a T5, with a nice 6 speed manual box. Not as fast as you might think though in standard form but a pleasant drive. A nice VW beetle can be really expensive unbelievably these days, so got to cross that off, but a kit car or buggy on a beetle chassis could be cheap and fun. Finally a Range Rover P38 for the price of a packet of fags. Useful to tow home the next project.

Something rare but comfy and very usable like this, as a bonus it will be tax free next year.

Like mine? Admittedly it's only a 2-litre, but it only cost me £400 from 'Dodgy' Danny Hopkins.
Despite being nearly 20 years old, and not a T5, it is the best motorway car I have ever owned or even been in, but it is a bit too large a car for me. To clarify that, 4720mm long is fine with pencil-thin pillars and goldfish ball visibility like the Jensen, but the Volvo has a high arse and thicker pillars that greatly reduce visibility. Amazing hi-fi set-up, though, got to be one of the most extensive for a production car.

The money’s no object car that the sale of the Jensen wouldn’t cover would have to be a Bentley Brooklands

More realistic would be a late classic shape Range Rover. Reminds me of mates rich parents cars when I was at school. We had a Hillman avenger.

Lastly the car of my youth. True Essex boy style. I had two of these (Not at the same time) both were factory standard cars, that’s how I liked them.

I reckon I would go back to Rover P5B Coupé, the perfect car when you are ready for something a little calmer, slower, more practical and more economical than your Jensen.

Top
Ford Granada MK11 2.8i Gaia X

Bottom
Ford Granada MK11 2.8i. 5 Speed Manual

Both cars I have owned in these colours and both I wished I didn't sell.

The Staaaaaag could be one of those "all the cars you ever need" cars...
Room the family and their stuff, sharp looks, manual or automatic, V8, convertible. And now reliable and decent enough to drive. And, unlike a lot of what I fancy, the steering wheel is on the correct side and it'll fit in the garage. They do tick a lot of boxes. Then, like now, they don't have much competition for the £.
But if these had a proper rear seat for my kids, and for the same sort of ££ as I reckon my Jensen is worth, this would be my choice. I adore these...

Already got one James (sadly not a T5, a 2.4 LPT). B*gger to reverse with the high back window and wide pillars - but has a decent size boot....which is some consolation.

Though the Alfa would be my "for similar money car", this would be one of my "bank a few quid and have a car" choices. Still no rear seat though so it looks like I'm thankfully stuck with the Jensen :)

Pretty much anything with 4 seats and a roof: although a Saab, Mini, or 2CV would be cool. Or a Volvo Bertone:
