Here is a picture of a lathe I picked up! Yes, it was bigger than I expected when I got there.
It is big enough to take a wheel.Have you seen our stolen Jensen FF 119/011 https://twitter.com/jensenffdotcom

That is a nice lathe, vee bedways and that gearbox is a real bonus you will appreciate with screw cutting and the price was just right. Have you found any numbers or identification marks to identify the manufacturer? in case you have not found it yet, http://lathes.co.uk/ is a good resource.Grant wrote:That's a lovely machine you have there Dave, what a bonus having the milling part on top too.. I am very envious of that.. it will give you hours of fun and such tremendous enjoyment when removing the finished article you have made
The reason I was curious was that I have always wanted and felt I needed a lathe, just for simple things like cutting a spacer perfectly square at the end while doing alternator conversions etc and many many more other small jobs, I have never had a lathe in my tool kit/workshop and only ever really used one back at school days, I was in a friends speed boat last year and asked him about the centre of his steering wheel .. he said "Oh I made it on a Lathe".. I said I have always wanted one and he son piped up and said if you want a lathe I have one that is in my way.. I was there like a bullet and he kindly gave me it, it didn't have a stand but I picked one up from another lathe on Ebay that sort of suited the workshop..I haven't really used it yet as I have had work to do on the house, I did just set it up and turned a piece of brass with it just to see the vibe sort of thing.. I know I will find it such a useful thing to have.. but now I want a milling machine on-top like yours!!, I may have to do a rig up with a pillar drill or something.. I do have a pillar drill but it is not moveable!! .. Here's a pic of my lathe and I have just picked up a reversing switch for it too as the lathe can cut threads too, but I realise that is another thing to learn with all the different angles of thread pitches etc.. here's a couple of pics of it and you may see a steering wheel in the workshop too >>

I know who you are Mike as I worked out it was you that done that beautiful work on Barry's CV8 .. I did meet Barry and have a gas with him once.. He's 8ft 11" and I'm 5ft 4 and half
Mike.. many thanks for your compliments on the Lathe there .. Everyone seems to say what a lovely Lathe it is, I love it too and am very greatful of it, I know nothing about Lathes but many say how nice it is so I am a lucky fella
The Lathe is a Southbend with a 4.5ft bed, it's an American Lathe and seems very popular out there in it's day and still has a good following now. I did actually ring and speak to the guy that set that website up Lathes.co.uk as I was after some bits for it, but he didn't have parts but I am starting to collect things for it, always looking out... Do you have Engineering background then Mike or just a hobby of yours?.. Do you have a Lathe then Mike?

It came with another one in pieces by the looks. I have not used it yet. The plan is to clean it up generally, and fully service the bits I need to use for a given job. There are a few manuals for it about. It is not obvious how it works at first look. Youtube and seeing pictures of other ones for sale, and how they were set up, asking sellers questions, etc.
This video was very instructive. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yGgsBFeiMtc" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; In this configuration, the shaft to be ground is rotated, and moved left to right on the bed, while the grinding wheel is brought into contact. Our model seems to be the Model 1, presumably their first machine. They made several hundred of them from about 1915 onwards, and RSRE had one, and various specialist engineering shops back in the day. Diesel injector systems wer prototyped on them apparently.

Wow , god I love machinery, especially this old stuff, it is just amazing.. what a lovely piece of kit John.. Re: Restoration of FF 119/133
Hi Grant. I had a look on the Lathes website as I thought yours looked similar to a Challenger I sold a while back. I have my Fathers 5" Raglan Little John and another I bought for spares a couple of years ago as I broke the saddle feed gears on mine and if this being confined to barracks malarky carries on I might get the parts swapped over and the other assembled to maybe sell. I do have an engineering background mainly in maintenance with toolroom and R&D work, I currently work for a classic car specialist.Grant wrote:Hi MikeWallace wrote: That is a nice lathe, vee bedways and that gearbox is a real bonus you will appreciate with screw cutting and the price was just right. Did you get any tooling and accessories with the Southbend?

I stalked you Mike, someone told me(who knows) that the work done on Barrys CV8 was really good to notch stuff.. so I done my homework and found out it was you.. this was before I met Long Barry!!
I didn't get any tools with the southbend Mike no, but it has auto feed on it which is good, but something confused me and I haven't asked anyone this question yet.. on the cross carriage it only auto feeds back towards you, not the other back(away from you).. I can't seem to suss that.. have you ever noticed that Mike on any machine.. I should imagine it is something so simple that I will Kick myself for when I suss it

Re: Machine Tools
You have to reverse the leadscrew rotation with the tumbler wheels in the gear cover, slacken the square head bolt and move the lever, it will likely have no stops so needs meshing correctly. Have you discovered the back gear yet?

Re: Machine Tools
Hi Mike .. Oh I see, I'll have a try, yes I have seen them as I can't help myself taking everything apart, I did have it apart when I 1st got it as I had to change the belt and oil everything, I saw that square drive and tumblers but I may have wrongly presumed that I change that then the auto feed of the carriage would then go from left to right feeding away from the chuck.. but I'll give it a whirl Mike.. thank you .. I'll keep you posted BatMan
