Re: Keeping Busy Whilst Self Isolating

Post by Kevin Birch »

Had a day off today away from the mayhem that is Nightingale hospital building, decided to relax and drop the fuel tank out, and start to replace the fuel line.
Tank is out, after removing wheel carrier, and rear exhaust and all looks OK, there has been slight weeping from the drain plug and fuel line banjo, but down to crusty fibre washers. Will clean and repaint tank and straps, after flushing the tank out. With the tank out I found the Panhard rod was once again bent. I had this problem when I stripped the rear suspension 4 years ago, it was easy to straighten, perhaps too easy, so presume it has thinned out with corrosion and is now weak. Will look for a piece of tubing I can slide over the top and weld up to give it it's strength back, probably better than finding a replacement that isn't also corroded, plus more fun to do :D Have got new copper pipe, quality filter which will go near the tank rather than in the engine bay, away from the heat, and braided rubber pipe for the flexi bits.

New bits

Ive been looking at a couple of MK1 air boxes for a good while now and seeing as time is something there is a lot at the moment I decided to start on them today.

One needs a few small repairs at the bottom but the other needs major surgery with the whole bottom half needing replacing including the insides.

I'm still working so not so much free time but the pubs are shut so today I removed the gear box from my 1937 Standard flying Nine. I found some one had been there before me and fitted a complete new clutch. It was stuck to the pressure plate though and they had written on the friction plate so it had never been used.

The selectors in the gearbox were stuck so off with the top.

Took the bell housing off so tomorrow I'll clean, de-rust it and give it a paint.

My father had one of these Standards back in the 1950s. Got it cheap from an old lady because "it wouldn't go over 30mph". He removed and cleaned the speedo, took it for a spin down the Southend Arterial Road, at which point it was apparent that it had actually been doing well above 30mph all along!

Handbrake adjusted.

Annoying buzz from exhaust finally solved. I thought a silencer was on the way out, it turned out to be a vibration noise from a washer on an exhaust bracket.

Small victories :D

Have now fitted fuel line from front to back, and installed filter near tank. I have used correct brackets to support both fuel and brake line, and is not surprising to find both go through the chassis holes centrally now. Had to make a bracket to fix the filter to the body, and repair the tank straps as they had corroded quite thin at one end. They have now been de-rusted and painted together with the tank, which is in good condition. More to come, the braided flexi hose is ethanol rated, so should be good for the future.

Nice Job there Kev and very satisfying to know it is done.. it's something I need to do on my Mk2 the fuel line  .. Nice the little clips you made.. my friend used to dismantle alot of Interceptors years ago ago and I remember raiding all his boxes for those little brake-clips as some of mine were missing too.. keep up all your good work Kev at the new hospital and in your garage.. and Stay Safe Mr Man :P

I am drawn to Kevin's post on new fuel pipes
I am trying to work out the best solution for my Jensen-Healey
Copper pipes would be the easiest and what i intended using but i am sure I saw a post
that said Copper fuel pipes are illegal.
They look good on Kevin's car so did i get it wrong
and they are in fact allowed .
Can anyone put me straight on this one

I know it is a car club, and everyone is sticking to posts about cars, but I have just finished scanning over 600 colour slides taken by my father who died a couple of years ago, the early slides are in poor condition and take a lot of cleaning up but the results are interesting. This photos looks like it was taken at a classic car show, but it is actually a traction engine rally in 1962 and this is just the car park (and me and my sister Roz).

How times have changed, what children wore to a rally! I don't think I've encountered a suit with short pants, but it makes perfect sense :D

John, I remember those balloons! There was a little goldfish model inside which bobbed around on a string, with pond plants on the outside.

Have scoured the internet and can't find anything about copper fuel lines being illegal, had me worried for a moment. The only issue with them is movement can work harden them and then they can split, but if they are fixed correctly, i.e P clips and not cable ties, then this shouldn't happen. Any flex should be taken up with the braided hose at the ends, if it's good enough for brakes, then surely fuel is less of a problem.

Fellix, your car looks stunning, but I think you've missed a bit!!!

Thank you, very kind (as we all know photos are very forgiving)- but which bits? I admit that I didn't open the boot lid and do those edges, but how did you know that?? Same with the fuel flap opening- which I did clean but did not wax :D

I am sure I have read that copper should not be used with Ethanol as it corroded it.

When I get on a computer later I will find it.

It is probably OK in the short term but long term I would think it has risks.
