I have car books from the 1930's which stated that oil would soon be running out and alternative fuels should be investigated.
I favour a system where electric cars automatically charge from above cables like dodgem cars, or by a conductor laid in the roads.
The drawback with the dodgem/trolleybus system is you have to carry a very long pole on the roof, to replace the pantograph/collector when it comes off on corners !!

Well ETH have developed a system that recovers CO2 from spent fuel from the air, and using nothing other than sunlight, water, produces methanol. They have one on a roof somewhere and the system works, although quantities of fuel produced are barely enough to run model planes, it does work.

No need mine rare earth elements of special magnets, or carry heavy batteries. They claim Ethanol has 60+ times the energy density of a charged battery, and they are hoping this fuel can be used for air and sea transport.

We can all faf about with conductors and poles in town on our commuter vehicles, then use proper fuel for long journeys in our classics.

Once the infrastructure was set up, then all electric vehicles could be fitted with a charge meter and meter readings would then be paid to the government or a central electricity supplier. The more miles you went, the more you would pay.
No road tax would be needed. Insurance should be cheaper as the risk of petrol explosions would be obviated.
Probably too simple, so not feasible.

Just think how different things would have been if the oil companies didn't have there way back in the early 1900s when electric car was king, had that been allowed to develop to travel greater distances, we wouldn't be having this conversation today.

And the cost?
£7,000-00/litre?

I looked it up. Zurich Airport are sponsoring them, and in return will get carbon neutral test fuel for ground services at market prices. The board of the company is a bunch of academics and scientists. All contributions will be money well spent no doubt.

The USA has all these solar installations sponsored by the taxpayers that churches and businesses put up over their parking lots.

It makes me laugh when I think of the amount of energy required to operate the Bessemer Convertors (blast furnaces) needed to make the steel girders that hold the structure and solar panels up.
