There is an old English saying

Those that laugh first, laugh last.

I think German people will not be happy in 6 months when the EU looks to them to fill the shortfall in funds as the UK was a major contributor.
So many of the other countries are relying on the EU for handouts

If it were just the Common Market we may have stayed but we can do without red tape, bureaucracy, We do not want to be told what to do by the EU

Rule Britannia

Regards

Just a small point that was often overlooked, the UK was a major policy shaper in the EU and was at the heart of most of the major decisions including the Maastricht Treaty and the launch of the euro where the Bank of England was part of the committee developing the euro. The UK was a leader in the EU. The UK led the free trade negotiations with Canada. Many things happened because the UK wanted them. The EU was not some foreign thing, we were the EU just as much as any of the other countries.

Merkel does not lie the whole day and she makes no xenophobic campains!

This is why it is very sad, that the vote was for Brexit, It was based on an indecent campaign!
Prejudices against foreigners and nationalism and many lies were used to win the election.

You can see in many other countries that the border to fair campaigns is passed by certain parties. Very sad!

The English speaking world has for centuries been the founding and leading force for democracy, freedom, justice, finance, human rights, literature, the arts, music, industry, science, engineering, technology, commerce, free trade, navigation, exploration, innovation, invention, medicine, etc etc. I grew up on the Greenwich meridian. A constant reminder of a global consensus that Britain is at the centre of time itself, and is so well into the space age ….. and beyond. I do not see this ending. It all started in these sceptred isles, and is unequalled by any other branch of humanity. No wonder we are a proud nation.

Shakespeare said it rather well....

"This royal throne of kings, this sceptred isle,
This earth of majesty, this seat of Mars,
This other Eden, demi-paradise,
This fortress built by Nature for herself
Against infection and the hand of war,
This happy breed of men, this little world,
This precious stone set in the silver sea,
Which serves it in the office of a wall
Or as a moat defensive to a house,
Against the envy of less happier lands,--
This blessed plot, this earth, this realm, this England."

There is a certain irony in the above two statements... Glorious indeed.
