RE POLISHED /PAINTED MK2 RIM'S CORRECT TIRE SIZE NEEDED ?

Dear Members,

I recently purchased a third Interceptor a MK2 yeh !

The car came with MK3 rims and tires.

The owner gave me the 4 original rims which had been sitting in a shed for 10 years which were pitted and lightly rusty,
I had them polished and repainted and they came out very nice.

The MK3 rims on the car now, have brand new 225 x 60 x 15 tires purchased in 2018.

When I put the original rims back on the car, do I put the 225 x 60 tires on the rims or buy 225 x 70 x 15 new tires ?

The 225 x 60 look more sporty and there is more room in the wheel well area.

When I had my rims redone for my 72 MK3 earlier this year , I put new 225 x 70 x 15 tires on the rims which fill the wheel space area.

This is a very large tire and are sold here in Los Angeles as a truck tire ?

Opinions and comments welcome.

Cheers Steven.

225 x 70 sounds too big.
I'd put the 225 x 60 back on.

Steve..235/60's have the same rolling radius as the correct 205/70's that would have been on the rims.. so if it were mine I would just use the 225's you have.. others may see it different, but that is what I would doImage
Your wheels look greatImage.. I much prefer them than the Alloys.. especially on a Mk2Image

Those fully chromed rostyles are very nice. a Jensen is a big heavy car it really needs a 225-70-15 or they just look and sit wrong a lower profile does not suit them and a 205 looks puny. I had 225-60-15 on a reef blue interceptor way back when you had to pay big money for them I was so excited I had dropped on them thinking they would be cool fitted them and was really disappointed in the low look, but as grant said each to there own,

This is my SP that I had a few yrs ago sitting on 225-70-15 the stance is perfect another member bought this car from me and had new tyres fitted 205-70-15 it killed the car for me just did not have the look,.

If it is like my car then the size should be on a plate under the center arm rest. Mine is an SP so it says GR70x15 which is the alpha numeric size for a 225/70x15. I think the mk3 used an ER70X!5 which equates to a 205/70x15, personally I think they look a little small and a larger tyre helps fill the wheel arch better. A 205/70x15,215/65x15 and 235/60x15 are all the same approx overall diameter but the 235mm section width puts a wider foot print on the road. 60 series had not been invented in the early 70’s if it had I am sure they would have been fitted to the Jensen.
If you have good 225/60x15 I would use them

235/60VR15 fitted on a wheel. It is a modern high performance tyre not available in the 70’s

those 235.s I am sure are not as big a rolling radius as a 225-70 they do not look as full/good in the arches as my old SP did

The SP I brought came on 205/70x15, I assumed it was the correct size but found out the SP has GR70 which are 225/70x15, the Interceptor 2 & 3 used an ER70x15(205/70x15) .The size tyre is shown in the center console arm rest glove box.
To cut a long story short the Tyres were on the wheels on the car for 800 yards up and down my street, the electrics had a meltdown and the carb decided it was not going to play ball so it has been a 3 year restoration. I think I have shares in Appleyards as he has supplied every panel and numerous other parts. The bodywork and electrics are all done, back from upholstery today, just the engine to rebuild and it should be on the road next spring. She has 17” wheels now because of the Fosseway brakes with 17x7 front and 17x8 rear with a 245/50x17 tyre which Fits and looks good in the arch.

I have 225/70 on my car since 1987. They were H rated whitewalls that of course are not available anymore. You can get Cooper Cobra in that size and also BF Goodrich Radial TA's. IMO the 225/70 looks right on these cars with the original wheels. :)

Hi guys,

THANK YOU all so much for your comments about the tires.

Here is a photo of the car taken in July when I bought it.

Richard Calver very kindly sent me a photo of the original color of the car in 1971,
which was METALIC FAWN,here is a photo of an FF in the same color.

The tires on this FF are huge and Pirelli P4000.

As you can see the car has MK3 rims on the car with the 225 x 60 x 15 tires.

Maybe I will put the tires 225 x 60 x 15 on the MK2 rims, see what they look like and if I do not like the look
then I go and buy the 225 x 70 x 15 ?

Have a great weekend !

Cheers Steven.
